4-Day Trial Walk – Day 3:
After dinner and day 2’s blog, I got an excellent night’s sleep at my buddy Richard’s house. I was up and on my way by 8am. Richard, the kind friend he is, was concerned about me continuing and offered to take me to my next stop, or maybe half way. I graciously declined, since I intended to do the whole 4-day walk to Chimney Rock or at least Lake Lure. The first leg was a bit tough, with a lot of ups, but I finally made it to my first rest stop at the W.E. Willis Grocery around 9:30, where I had a steak biscuit and an iced coffee. I was going to get a cherry danish, but some guy saw me get it and recommended one of their homemade biscuits for only 99 cents. It was quite good, and the iced coffee was very refreshing. The next stop was at the SpinX at the intersection of highways 11 and 14, where I was supposed to turn onto 14. I sat down outside to mix my fresh bottle of water with my Emergen-C while I drank another iced coffee. On the same bench was
a young man that looked a bit beat up, but seemed friendly. He asked me if I had a cellphone and when I said yes, he asked if he could borrow it to leave messages on Facebook for his friends. I figured it was okay, so I did. Unfortunately he sort of wore out my generosity when after 10 minutes he still hadn’t returned it. I ended having to ask for it, then tell him I needed to head out. He complained about the SpinX wanting 72 cents for a cup of water, so Ieft him what I had left in mine after making space for my Emergen-C.
Up to this point all was well and I was making good time. Unfortunately, when I’d copied the directions to simple text files, I’d removed the little “turn right then go 45 feet” and then the continuation of it, so I read that I was supposed to turn right onto Highway 14 to reach Landrum, when in actuality, I should have turned left. Anyways, I’d walked over 5 miles before I got suspicious, since Landrum was only 4.6 miles to the center. When I checked the map on my
phone, it was showing places I’d already passed, between where I was and Landrum! My wife was coming to pick me up just outside of Landrum anyways, to spend the night with her, my daughter and her family, so she just went through Landrum on Highway 14 until she ran into me. I felt so stupid, but was not going to give up, so I’ll have her take me back to Landrum tomorrow morning to continue from there. On a side note, on our way back to Landrum, we stopped at the same SpinX so I could get a more refreshing Dr. Pepper, and lo and behold, the same young guy was still sitting outside on the bench, after more than 2 hours, sound asleep sitting up. My wife felt so bad for him that she was going to give him some money, but he didn’t wake up.
We got to our cabin at Creekside Campgrounds just the other side of Chimney Rock, where I settled in. I was pretty tired, so I took a short nap, then had a great ground beef and vegetables dinner, took a shower and hit the hay soon there after.
