Waiting for the bus in Annecy
The bus departed one minute late!Another traveling day - and finally we are in the French Alps. Comfortable, quiet bus trip took about 1 1/2 hrs with great views the entire way. Only one stop in a small town. Lush green countryside - very neat and clean with very modern roadways and a number of tolls. The mountains began to surround us as we left Annecy and continued to grow on each side of the valley. Shortly before we reached Chamonix we passed the entrance to the Mont Blanc tunnel (it is about 7 miles long) that takes you under the mountain into Italy! If we continue up the valley passed Chamonix we'd be in Switzerland! We're on the very edge of France.
Chamonix looks like it will be a very nice place to spend the week. On first glance you get the impression that Squaw Valley is a mini knock-off of Chamonix. A big difference is the proximity and height of the mountains on both sides of the valley.
By staying in lodging in Chamonix we get passes for the bus and train which serve the villages up and down the valley. A bit like having your own full-sized train set to play
On the road to Chamonix
We followed the highway that goes to Turin and Milan. It is about 200 mi to Milan by car via the Mont Blanc tunnel fron Annecy - about 40 mi shorter to Chamonix. That should be quite a drive. on. Sure we will provide more info on the train as the week goes on.
The apartment we have is the nicest of all in the trip. Very spacious and quiet, on the 2nd floor of multi-unit building and 5 min walk to the train station or the town center.
Looks like the weather will cooperate this week. Sunny mornings with chances of pm thunderstorms - classic mountain weather. Plans for a hike tomorrow morning. Will let you know how it goes.
