Sunday Sep 2

All four of us are beginning to show reaction to the ever present smoke. Sneezing, coughing, dry eyes and throat. Even though conditions have improved a lot because of recent rains, according to locals, we can feel it, and we are affected.

The entrance into Kootenay National Park is incredible. A deep gorge carved out by water over centuries is now the base for the Banff-Windermere Highway (#95) to Castle Junction in Banff National Park.

Like everyone else, we took the obligatory dip into Radium Hot Springs. Great sitting in the warm water, clean we hope, since it appears some people are allowed to go in without adhering to the “swimwear only” rule.

In exploring more of the Park along Highway 95, we found that fencing put up by the Park to prevent collisions with wildlife takes away from the Park experience by keeping wildlife out of sight of visitors. We still have not seen any wildlife and since the smoke so far has prevented us from seeing the majesty of the mountains, we all feel somewhat disappointed.

One of the very nice experiences was to explore the suspension bridge over Sinclair Creek. From a distance, the Creek appeared dry, but from up close we realized there still quite a bit of water flowing. Some guys were doing some fly fishing and appeared to have had some luck with that.

We had wanted to walk the Marble Canyon trail, but it’s too far today and we’ll do it some other day on our way to Banff.

Early to bed today since tomorrow will be a long day on the Icefields Parkway.

Smoke
From more than 650 separate wildfires in British Columbia. It’s getting a bit better now.

You really can see the smoke
I wonder how I would have been with my asthma. How far away are the fires? They are not as much on the news anymore. The smoky atmosphere is really apparent in some of your photos. Looking forward to seeing you next Monday night around supper time. Let's go out...maybe to that abbey-like place we went to last time? My treat!

Abbey
Yeah Louise, one fire was only meters away from the highway, we clearly saw the flames next to us from the car. Next Monday is a date!
