Railay Beach, what a mission to get to.....but totally worth it! We took a flight from Bangkok to Phuket, then took a 2hr car shuttle from Phuket airport to Ao Nang beach. Along the way we saw some unusual passengers in the truck next to us....two elephants, not something you see every day! From Ao Nang beach we climbed in a long tail boat on the beach with all our suitcases (where I fell over when I got in because the ladder flipped over when it went over a wave) and made our way in a tiny boat to Railay. Unfortunately it started raining just as we got to the beach, but we got into our room just before the downpour! We could have done the commute easier if we had a flight to Krabi-but flights were already booked, or taken a ferry across to Railay -but our flight arrived after the ferries had departed. But in the end it all went to plan and we arrived at the beach. It's definitely worth the effort though, I've never seen a beach so beautiful! The reason it's so hard to get to is because you can only get there by longtail boats
because of the big cliffs on either side of the beach, which make it more beautiful. Our resort we are staying at is right on the beach with the dining area on the beach and two pools (one looking over the beach). We have a private bungalow type room with a little pond by the entrance where we have our friendly frogs that come out at night (also blair and I noticed something big move in there but we're not so keen to find out what it is). We had dinner at the restaurant on the first night and watched the beautiful sunset, walked along the beach and then went for a swim in the ocean. The next day we had breakfast at the hotel and went for a walk along the beach where down one of the side streets we found somewhere to do our washing. We had a pretty relaxing day with multiple swims and lots of walking. Railay is a great place for couples and families as you don't get the young 18 year olds partying everynight, it's more of a slow paced, relaxing place. Anyway we plan to explore more of the peninsula today by visiting
a few caves and walking to the bay next to us.....and just chilling out.
One thing I forgot to mention about our experience in Thailand is the way they still treat women which compared to nz is very 'old school'. Some people would only greet blair and ignore me and on multiple occasions I would pay for something and they'd give blair back the change, or worse I'd give them my credit card and they'd give it to blair to sign. So I've asked Blair if I can pay for everthing just to throw them off! Anyway we are going to breakfast shortly, will do another update in Phi Phi.
