We arose in the morn and headed back to the cathedral. Alas, it didn't open until 12:30PM. So we walked around the old town of Canterbury. We walked over to the Westgate tower. I climbed it to the top for some good photos. We found the Greyfriar's chapel in a park, but couldn't go into it. It is the oldest Franciscan building in all of England. As we walked toward the cathedral, we saw a boat tour of old Canterbury. So we signed up and took the tour. Our guide was a wonderful young 24 year old kid who had just gotten his architecture degree. After the boat tour we walked over to the cathedral. It is absolutely huge! We spent about an hour and a half walking around the inside of it. We then walked over to the ruins of St. Augustine's abbey. The abbey was started in 579AD. That's old! We slogged back to our hotel for a nice nap and then a nice Italian dinner. Happy Birthday to Stacy!! She is now -- years old! This morning, we left the hotel and drove to Dover. We went to Dover Castle. It overlooks the English channel.
You can actually see the coast of France from its ramparts. There are also secret tunnels dug into the cliffs that were used starting in Napoleon's time. They were used in WWI and WWII. In fact the rescue of British and French soldiers from Dunkirk during the second world war was coordinated from here. We then jumped into the car and drove over Deal Castle. It is shaped like a flower with pedals around a central round tower. There wasn't much inside of it though. So then we drove over to Walmer Castle, which is shaped a lot like Deal Castle. It was used later as a summer home and had lots of period furniture in it. It was a very beautiful day, very sunny, but a little chilly. We left there at around 4:45PM. We wanted to go and see the cliffs of Dover and so we found a place in our tourbook to go to, to get the best views. That would be St. Margaret's-at-Cliffe We got there and found that we had to hike 20 minutes to get a view. The sun was going behind the cliffs and we thought we were going to miss them. We
started hiking and got there in about 10 minutes. The cliffs we could see were all lit up by the setting sun. It looked really cool!. We final headed back to our hotel. We walked into town to a pub for dinner. Tomorrow, we drive to Hastings, our last place before the airport hotel in London.

So awesome. The White cliffs of Dover were cool. Love all the stained glass.
