Auckland - KL - Heathrow - Reykjavik took a bit over 36 hours but it was worth it. We arrived at about midnight and Saturday night here in downtown is very much a happening place. Must admit, not so much for us though.

Accommodation at Thor Guest House is cosy, convenient to everything but not cheap. Iceland prices are more expensive than New Zealand in general.

Today we did our own walking tour of the city and did 20,800 steps according to my pedometer. A couple of churches including the very spectacular Hallgrimskikja with amazing views from the top and its big organ.

The Settlement exhibition, an excavation of a longhouse with a fantastic interactive display around it, was really well done. The weekend market was fun, like any market, a mixture of second hand junk and some really nice craft stuff.

And that is one of the reasons I am in love with this place - wool garments, balls of wool, felt even bits of raw fleece everywhere. Lots of other art and craft of all sorts too. And the architecture is amazing, a real variety - lots of vertical corrugated iron, some amazing stone and stunning glass. The Harga concert hall is a fascinating place. And then there are sculptures and street art, and unfortunately graffiti, everywhere.

To wrap up the day we had dinner at a lovely water front restaurant with Hugrun and Sunna who I met at the Language school in Italy some years ago.

Day one - a great success...
