Hi guys,
I'm going to be taking the Trans-Siberian railway from St Petes to Beijing stopping at Moscow, Irkuksk and Ulan Bator, for a total of 21 days. I'm really confused about what currencies to take and how much since I'm travelling through 3 countrys. Many people say US dollars but will this be suitable for all the countrys I'm going to be visiting? Or do I need a combincation of US, Russian, Mongolian and Chinese?
Any advice would be great.
Chris
Reply to this If it's like a normal Russian train there will be people at each station knocking on your window with goods to sell, so bring roubles. Dollars are useful to change but it's (technically) illegal to spend them in Russia. My advice is to take enough roubles as you think you will need - in Moscow, always more than you think - and keep the rest in dollars to change in Mongolia and China.
Reply to this Thanks for the advice. How much do you suggest I change into roubles take then for about 15 days travelling through russia, just to give me an idea?
Reply to this It really depends on where you'll be - treat Moscow the same as any capital city, then factor in souvenirs/noodles from the sellers at the train stations.
Reply to this Hmm, well when I went to Amsterdam I spent about £100 a day, lol. I doubt I will spend that much again! I guess St Petes and Moscow will be expensive, I doubt there will be much to spend money on in Irkuksk or Ulan Bator?
Thanks again.
Reply to this You could easily spend that much in Moscow, but prices outside the main two cities are about half as much, so Irkutsk won't be as expensive - although I'm sure there are a lot of touristy things to be bought.
