I'm trying to plan a trip to England and I'll need to use public transport a fair bit- can anyone give me a link to a site for the normal trains and bus services? all I've been able to find is luxury coaches and the like!

Yes - there are several. A relatively recent innovation is the travel planner - not by any means perfect but helpful:

Transport Direct - Britain's free online journey planner

This is a government agency and officially sponsored. You will get links to tickets and the like.

I have a short guide on getting the cheapest rail tickets (usually in advance - walkup tickets in the UK are extremely expensive):

Cheap rail tickets in the UK

There are other options too - Martin Lewis's MoneySaving site is very useful:

Cheap Train Tickets: how to find hidden fares

and he has some great forums where you can pop specialized questions.

Happy planning,
