so I'm in Germany working for just 3 more weeks, which doesn't give me much time to travel (if any!)..
so I'd like to know if there is anything you'd recommend seeing.. especially around mid-western germany, near Düsseldorf and Cologne....

I lived in Heidelburg for 6 months.
It has a very pretty centre. I would certainly recommend it.
If you are using public transport be sure to check on the German rail (Deutsche bahn) internet site for train passes and special offers. I live in Munich. Sometimes I buy a day pass for the trains. It covers all of Bavaria for a day and is good for 5 adults and several children. It costs only around 30 Euros.
