Need help with UK Car Rental
16 years ago, March 19th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #30264
I'm traveling through the Uk the for 3 weeks in June and would like to pick a rental car in Gatwick and return in Dublin.
Any suggestions or reccomendations?
Thanks

You might have difficulty with this for several reasons:
- you're picking up in one country and leaving it in another. A lot of hire companies won't permit this
- the car ferries from UK-Ireland are quite expensive. Typically you might pay up to £100 for a songle trip with driver.

It would be cheaper to take a new car hire in Dublin; is there any reason you need to drive to Ireland? Reply to this

Thanks for the reply,
There are 5 of us traveling. Will spend roughly a week in England a week, maybe a little less in Scotland and then the remaining week 10 days in Ireland.
We can driv back to Gatwick and make it a round trip, but woulof prefer to fly out of Dublin?
Thanks

Hi NC,
I suggest you collect the car from Gatwick as planned, leave it at your Scottish airport (Ryanair fly Glasgow-Prestwick to Dubilin, Cork etc), and then arrange another car from your irish airport. You pay a small extra charge for not leaving a car at your point of collection (but it would be worth it in your case).

Also remember that Ryanair charge extra for hold luggage, so the price may not be as cheap as first quoted. If you do want to have the car all the time, and manage to get a hire company that allows you to leave the car in Ireland, then your cheapest ferry crossing will be Stranraer/Cairnryan in Scotland to Belfast/Larne in N. Ireland (part of the UK). It may be possible to tour Ireland and leave your car in N. Ireland, having collected it at Gatwick. Finally, don't forget to check my Dublin guide - please see my profile for details! Reply to this
