I ran across some blogs from last year about Budapest and was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice.
I will be in Vienna in August and will have about ten days of free time during the last week before I fly out of Paris.
I am considering going to Budapest because I hear it is affordable. I guess I am asking about general advice on staying in the city or even a surrounding city. I would greatly appreciate hearing of affordable accommodations and interesting places (that I might not find in guidebooks) for me to see while I'm there.
Thanks.
Brian
Reply to this Hi Brian,
Hungary is really nice and cheaper than neighbouring Austria... I can't really suggest anything that isn't in the Lonely Planet - these guidebooks are very good, and seem to have everything.
Bits of advice - there is a festival on the first weekend of August and the 20th August is the national day -- so around these times accommodation will be v.scarce. So either book in advance and see the festivities or avoid at these times.
The cheaper hostels are located at the end stations of the metro lines, the more expensive in the center - 2500huf - 5200huf -
www.xe.com for conversions. For example Station Hostel is cheap, and Marco Polo is expensive. You'll get approached on the trains and "pressured" to stay in a particular hostel - so good to have the prices known in advance.
As to what to see and do - the national gallery is fantastic, and located in the former palace; the national museum is very informative and interesting... really depends what you like -- history/art/outdoors/bars & clubs? It has all of these things.
Reply to this I just got back from a fabulous trip to Budapest, and I have a great accommodation tip. I stayed in a homey, comfortable room complex right in the heart of Budapest.

Reply to this We spent a week in Budapest and had a wonderful time... lots of things to see and do. We found an apartment for the week and it was alot less expensive than staying in a hotel plus it had the advantage of kitchen facilities. Our apartment was located near Heros Square in an area where there are lots of embassies. As for things to do in Budapest DK has a good Budapest guide which will give you lots of idea. Definately go to one of the famous baths there. Also, another fun thing to do and NOT in the guidebooks is up in the castle district.... there is a Labrynth which is underground and accessible from the road up to the hill. There is no shortage of things to do in Budapest!!! and it is alot less expensive than Vienna.... we did Vienna, Budapest and Prague that trip.

Reply to this Budapest is a very amazing place for holiday vacation. Here very cheap and affordable accommodation facilities.
Reply to this We had a one-week trip in Budapest. We stayed in a hotel near to the Western Railway Station, called Easy Hotel, here: http://uk.video.yahoo.com/watch/3049615/8703000 I liked it because it was almost in the city centre. We found this hotel about a funny advert😊 My husband and I only had to pay 15 /night for two of us! I think it was very cheap. We also liked the food, and it was cheap too, and the people were nice! So i think a trip in Budapest is affordable, and it worths because of the amazing sights!
Reply to this If you go to Budapest you must experience the baths. My favorite is Széchényi Spa (Széchenyi Fürdő), Pest, Állatkerti krt. 11 (right next to the Zoo; metro: Széchenyi fürdő, M1 yellow line)
Reply to this to anyone who is planning a trip to Budapest I recommend
to choose from a selection of accommodations all over town. Reply to this
