My husband and I are travelling to the UK for about 2 and half weeks. (Grandma wont babysit the 3 kids any longer than that or she could be driven insane)

We will be staying with a friend in South London Suburbs (about 30 mins away by train) so we will have few hotel costs.

However I am wondering just how much it will all cost (coming from Australia - damn that Pound) We are visiting a friend who is homesick, and desperate for some friends to visit her, and I know she will be generous to us, but we dont want to cost her a fortune.
are there any cheap car rental places?

I see many attractions in south england, will will be able to get to them and back to her house each night (so we dont have to pay for a hotel) how busy are the roads if an attraction is say 50km away.

And if anyone knows the cost/ time taken to go to france with a car

Bobbie,

Ok I'm a little biased but if you can take a little time away from London during your two weeks away I would really recommend coming down to Devon and Cornwall! Beautiful beaches, stunning moorland, and there's some fantastic history too.

In terms of travelling around the UK, wow yes it is expensive. If you don't mind roughing it a little bit I would check out the Megabus (www.megabus.com/uk) where you can travel for £1, you can get this from London to Exeter or Plymouth in Devon, or even make the track across to Cardiff in Wales. It's really not that bad a journey!

Enjoy your trip!

I'm also heading over to the UK from Aus in a month or so, but will be backpacking around the country for 2 weeks.

We're picking up a BritXplorer pass from National Express (www.nationalexpress.com - the pass lets you take buses anywhere in britain, however many times you like, for a set number of days - 7, 14 or 28) and planning to rough it as much as possible, but I'm still trying to work out a rough budget.

most hostels outside of london (we have family in london to stay with) seem to be priced at around 12 to 15 quid a bed, which doesn't seem too bad. Taking out transport costs, what does anyone reckon is a rough budget for day to day bare-bones? Say, bed & three meals a day.

It'd give us something to work on and go from. cheers! Reply to this
