Train seat reservations vs. tickets, what's the difference?

Just wondering if I need to make seat reservations ahead of time when traveling by train

I am planning to take the train from Prague to Budapest and I am wondering if I need to make the seat reservations ahead of time, or can I just buy the ticket?

When I was researching trains through Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe, I noticed that there were seat reservations and then there were tickets....does anyone know the difference and what is the best way to go about guaranteeing that I will get on the train?

thanks much!! Reply to this

In these countries seat reservations are not compulsory (but possible).
All you need to get on the train is a train ticket.
An additional seat reservation will ensure you a seat, otherwise you may on risk that you won't get a sit (standing in the gangway, sitting on your luggage). But this may occur only during peak travel times.

Seat reservations and tickets are not directly related, you can buy them independently of each other (albeit this makes not much sense if you want both).
