As a virgin traveller faced with giving up my GHD's, make up and stilletoes for what looks like a rather small backpack and some flipflops, could anyone please help with what I really do need to take & what is next to useless when travelling!!
I am 24 years old and have given up a good job, rented my house out and bought a backpack and am going travelling for a year with a friend. We are doing the normal route round of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Fii & America.
I leave in 3 weeks and am now starting to face the fact that I need to pack! I have read books I have been given that list endless items that are suggested you take, but have just been completely baffled by what is essential & what is just over the top!
Can anyone help me from their experience with what I really do need to take & what I should leave at home! (Well, in my mum & dads loft!!)
Thanks, Leza.
Reply to this Hi Leza,
Welcome to TravelBlog.
The main thing to remember is that all the countries you have mentioned are well travelled by tourists and you're going to be able to buy just about anything you need there.
Make sure you have plenty of memory card space (or buy an external drive) to store all those photos!
Have a great trip!

I usually take 2 outfits. U can handwash one, while u wear the other.
Dont take jeans. If u hand wash them, they take ages to dry.
Underwear.
I also take basic bathroom stuff. Shampoo, soap and a razor and nail clipper.
U could bring a small amount of make up, if u want. It does not take up so much room.
I also take suncream, if I am going someplace sunny.
Towel.
A pen.
A couple of books in English.
A travel guidebook.
I usually have less than 10KG of stuff.

Reply to this Spent a year travelling the world and my one piece of advice is take as little as possible -
1. Buy a few dry fit T-shirts they last forever and dry quickly. I must have hand washed each of my shirts a 100 times.
2. Dido above - don't take jeans, take forever to dry
3. Don't need to buy shampoo, some razor etc., every town in the world sells this stuff for half the cost of home
4. Buy as much in Asia as you can. Besides the bare necessities of underwear etc, buying t-shirts, flip flops etc is so cheap in Asia. Also you can get cheap imitation books i.e. Lonely Planets - don't worry I have spent more money on LP's that most so I have no problem supporting those that sell the fake ones!
