I'm a 20 year old girl living in helsinki for a year as an au pair, the thing is, ive studied alot of russian history and im dying to go to St petersburg which is only a 4hour train ride away from where i am now.
id preferably like to go alone, so i can explore all the sites at my own pace, but everyone ive spoken to says going to russia alone as a young woman is a crazy idea.
is this true?
how safe is it for lone woman travelers in st petersburg?

It's generally safe, but you do need to know some Russian. There are very few signs in English and Russians don't really speak English. Though SP should be better than other places. For actual safety, just use common sense, like don't go to a dark street in the night by yourself and so on.

St. Petersburg is very dangerous - as a twenty year old girl on your own you're exactly the person who is a perfect target for thieves, if not worse. Russia is a great place, but if you're going to Piter at least find a few of the town's thousands of Finns to take care of you (and help you to explore) while you're there. Reply to this
