Traveling to Spain for New Years: Train Tickets?

What is the best way to get around on the train? Buy tickets there, or get a pass before hand?

Hi fellow travelers,

My friend and I are traveling to Spain this winter for two weeks (Dec. 26 to Jan. 9). We'll both end up flying in and out of Madrid, so during the rest of the time we're going to tour Spain in a circle--starting from Madrid and ending up back there. We will also go to Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla and either Salamanca or Caceres (we don't know which of those yet) before ending back up in Madrid.

Since we're staying in Spain and traveling in a circle, we are going to travel on trains. My question: what is the best way to get tickets? Should we get a pass on Renfe, or should we buy them as we go? I've heard that traveling on the train is cheaper in Spain than in most European countries, but we wanted to know what would be best timewise too. Especially for getting back to Madrid in time on the 9th. I don't want to miss my flight!!

Thanks for any help!

hellow!, you can get your train tickets in internet (renfe.es), in the same way that getting an airline ticket, or pay it in the station, if you are going to do a short way like Madrid-Segovia, Avila or Toledo, the train works like the underground, it is, one way ticket, or 10 ways tickets, you can get it in automatic machines (like the metro, its very cheap). I think that schooll hollidays will finish at 9 jan, but im not sure (Reyes day is 7 jan) so buy your train tickets some days before
trains in spain are not expensive, but in my experience in holland belgium or germany trains are more cheapers, may be you can go by bus to some cities like salamanca-caceres, (half price that trains)
One advice: new year party in madrid is great!, around 48 hour non stop! Reply to this
