Which country has the rudest/friendliest People

I was just curious which country or countries have the friendliest people and which have the rudest.

this is an insensitive thread bordering on slight racism and prejudice, like Susin said there are assholes in every country. i think the post above mine is a joke post but it's really not that funny..... Reply to this

It isn't a racist thread, but because all comments within it are by definition subjective it's impossible to make proper conclusions. After all, no-one has defined 'rudeness'. I agree that the post above yours in insensitive, I thought about deleting it, but comments like that only invite other posters to think that the writer himself is an asshole!

The rudest people in the world are....you guessed it: AMERICANS. Everyone knows that, especially people from Chicago and the 'red' states - obnoxious, fat, loud, hysterical morons. But they think their superior and that it's really everyone else who's rude. Don't get me wrong, most Americans are alright.. just not the ones you see at Republican rallies.

Friendliest I'd say: anyone from Buddhist 'far east' countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, etc.

I find that Americans worry too much about being percieved as 'ugly Americans'. Nobody thinks about or cares about what Americans do except Americans. That is typical of our self-centered society. Trust me, Americans do not hold a monopoly on obnoxiousness. Because of this self-conscious fear of being percieved as some sort of obnoxious American, it actually leads to timid, awkward behavior and can ruin an otherwise good time.

Stop worrying about it, go have fun, be respectful, learn some of the language and soak up as much local color as possible. It's all good. Reply to this

Not sure that is true. I have heard quite few negative comments about Americans, both while travelling and on internet forums. But, it is certainly true that they dont have the monopoly on rudeness as bad puppy says. I have seen examples of both incredibly nice folks and not so nice ones in just about every country I have been to. I dont in fact have a top niceness and rudeness country I have visited.

Yeah, bad puppy is right. Dont worry too much about how rude people will be. Just adjust yourself a little while travelling, to fit in with the expectations people in the various countries have of what is acceptable. Some countries require more adjustments than others, but my philosophy is generally to make encounters with others smooth, whenever possible while travelling. Sometimes this also involves avoiding some situations and some people.

Everyone knows that...

I think that is too much of a sweeping statement. Reply to this

... remember that YOU are the foreigner...

Foreigners deserve to be treated with respect too. I adjust my behaviour, but not because I am a foreigner and should bend, but because in some countries some western behaviour may be misunderstood, and may even put me in danger. Reply to this

IMHO though its a very interesting post, but it has a smell of social and Ethnic discrimination. What the poster means "Which country has the rudest/friendliest People" ?

Indeed! Far too many generalisations, in my opinion.

It is never easy as a moderator to decide where to draw the line with these types of discussions. Where do they stop being informative and become just a display of ugly prejudice?

This would make a good discussion topic, so I am going to branch this thread to make one.

I don't think I've ever been anywhere that I would say everyone was rude - there are places in which people aren't as open or forward as others. In terms of friendliest the first country that comes to mind is the Philippines. The people were continuously friendly, hospitable and accommodating. We received constant invitations to stay with people and offers of being shown around the area, and everyone just wanted to chat. At first we found it all a bit daunting and would wonder what the catch was - after awhile we just realised they were all really great people! Reply to this

I am an european who lived a several years in USA. A few months ago I have returned to Europe and I can compare the rudeness I think very well. Let me tell you that I met more rude people in these several months in Europe, than I have met in USA for all those years. I love my country a lot, but the people....I am sorry... Reply to this

Europe isn't a country, you can't judge a whole continent based on one country in it... Reply to this

i don't think that is based on nationalities.maybe it was once, when the world wasn't so connected, but nowadays those boundaries disappear. this is just prejudice. Reply to this

We were pleasantly surprised on a recent visit to France, none of the arrogance or rudeness that we had expected, the only disappointment was that in ordinary cafes and restaurants, the ones that we could afford, the standard of cooking was poor. Three hotels, we were on a coach tour, added vanilla flavoured cream to the scrambled eggs and none had hash browns or fried potatoes. Reply to this
