Which countries should I visit in October?
16 years ago, July 8th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #16235
Hi All,

Im going to the Octoberfest in '08 and I plan to be in Munich for 3 days. I want to spend 15 days total in europe. So far in my travels, Ive been to Munich, Berlin, Paris, Salzburg, Interlaken, Brugge, and Cologne.
I dont know where I should go this time! Theres too many choices! Can you help me narrow them down? (And please include how many days youd think I would need to spend in each place.) Im an artist, so I love museums. Im a 24 year old gal, so nightlife is a plus. I travel solo, so safety is also an issue. (no super seedy places please). I also love outdoorsy adventure. hiking, biking, etc.

Here are some places that have peeked my interest...do you have any experience with them? Or can you think of any other places that might fit the bill?:

Prague
Vienna
The Black Forest (Freiburg)
Hamburg
Amsterdam
Copenhagen
Venice
Rome
Pompeii (Mt Vesuvius)
Pisa
Barcelona
Madrid

Thanks in advance for any/all advice!

Hello,

Interesting options you have for your vacation. I would choose Spain for sure, but , in my oppinion, Barcelona and Madrid are too crowded. A better option can be Salamanca, which combines both istorical attractions and touristic seightseeing in one place. and speaking from entertainemnt point of view, be sure you will never get bored of the opportunities. You can check also Casino El Tormes resource. I am sure you will be convinced! All the best. Reply to this

Vienna and Venice for sure. Both historic and beautiful, but neither is boring. There's enough to do in each city for at least three days. They shouldn't be too packed in October, but the weather will still be nice. Reply to this

Thanks for the replies! I kept thinking that Vienna might be beautiful, but boring. (i was imagining lots of old rich people for some reason...maybe cuz Salzburg was sorta like that...) Glad to hear that you liked it travelgirl! Barcelona is still very high on my list...but it's just so FAR away from Munich. Reply to this

Hey Karrde I am also planning on going to Europe this October!
The itinerary includes a
London, Paris, AAmsterdam, Prague, Munich( these two are backwards geographically but necessary to make it to Oktoberfest) then we will spend time in Italy, from Venice, Florence, cince de terre and of course Rome, then on to Barcelona, and then back to london!

I am also wondering if anybody has figured out if train, plane or bus is the best way to travel between specific cities

Hi Karrde,

If you are travelling between Venice and Rome, and you like Renaissance art, then I think you should include Florence on your itinerary. Also, in my view, a morning or afternoon is long enough in Pisa - all the main attractions in the town are situated close together.

Palazzo, the Spanish airline Clickair (clickair.com) operates cheap flights between Rome and Barcelona.

I've been to both Venice and Barcelona: of the two, I'd go to Venice...Venice is everything that you see in the movies and photographs and more...it's beautiful, it's enchanting lots of art and history and it's just a unique city...Venice is worth a visit definately. I did like Barcelona but I'm not in love with the city...to me there are better places to visit in Spain than Barcelona but that's just me. I've heard that Madrid is very cool, I haven't heard anything bad yet about Madrid. Prague is supposed to be fantastic and I eventually want to go. Florence is also, hands down, a city that cannot be missed in Italy! Florence is amazing...words cannot describe what Florence is like....the history, art, culture the city just mind boggles you..I know it just blew me away. I only know of Pisa from what I saw on my bus ride into Italy when I arrived into florence, and it looked very pretty but I've heard from a lot of people that all there is to see is the leaning tower of Pisa and you're done, so it's up to you. I did like what I saw though of the city. I've heard nothing but awesome things about Rome, so definately go there....I also highly recommend Avingon in France, Nice in France, Krakow in Poland and Granada in Spain. I've been to all of those and absolutely enjoyed myself. Good luck, enjoy your trip and have some fun! Reply to this

Wow! It sounds like we're doing the same thing. I have a tentative plan, and am hoping to get it booked and sorted this weekend.

I'll be in Munich from Oct. 2-5, am planning on going elsewhere from the 6-12 or 13, and back to Munich (we're going for family). My original plan had Dresden (1), Prague (1), Bruges (maybe Brussels)(2), Amsterdam (1), Hamburg (half-day) and Berlin (2). It's been called too ambitious. That itinerary (a combination of planes and trains) priced out at about $350 euros I think.... virgin-express.com (now Air Brussels) did Belgium to Hamburg, Berlin, or Prague. Transavia did Amsterdam/Berlin but it only did it well on odd or even days, and something called Hahn did Prague-Amsterdam.

The problem with flying is getting to airports early, and then possibly getting your backpack/luggage back later. Then again, train takes forever to some of the places, and overnight trains can be $$$. I looked at the Benelux-Germany saver pass for 2 people (About $300 CAD for 2 people), but that looks like you have to be really careful about days and stuff.

If anyone can pass on helpful info to me as well as Karrde, I'd really appreciate it. I don't know how much time I need in cities, but I'm different in one respect -- I'm not into (art) museums.

My current itinerary is kind of Hamburg (1) - Berlin (2) - Amsterdam (2) (which I think may be too much) - Bruges (1) - Brussels (1), which may give me a chance to convince my husband that Dresden is a possibility 😊

Thanks to Karrde and anyone else with advice! Reply to this

Hi Karrde,
My name id Hudson Mutai and am from Kenya East Africa. I would recommend you to come to any of the East African countries, Kenya, Uganda or Tanzania. If you are really interested in seeing some of the world big five, they are available in Africa. The advantage Africa has over other countries is that we still preserve our natural resources. I would urge you to visit this country so that you are able to see all of the wild animals. Kenya for instance has almost 42 National parks with each one of them having majority of the animals.
I believe you have had of the great Masai Mara national reserve where once a year their is a great migration of the wild beast, zebras in millions from Tanzania to Kenya.
I would be willing to give you more information about this 3 East Africa countries because of my traveling experience.
Please get intouch so that I can give you more information on which african country best suits your needs

Regards

Hudson
