Backpacking in Europe Alone

Is backpacking alone in Europe a good idea? I think that men might have it a bit easier here....thoughts?

Hello Everyone:

I am a 24 year old female and I am planning a Europe trip. I am adventurous and would love to spend how ever long it takes to backpack around (aka until the money runs out). The problem here is that backpacking alone might be lonely and dangerous. Considering this, I was thinking of changing my plans and visiting 2 cities (each) in 2 countries. I know that booking with a tour group would be a drag, but it would be safer and less lonely. Thoughts/ideas/comments/helpful hints? 😊

I am a 23 year old female and am also hoping to back pack this fall and am facing the same issues. I don't want to be constrained by a tour group. Let me know if you come up with any alternatives.

I found this link that was kind of helpful.

Tati and Kaitlyn,

I am 47 and did a 13 day trip to Germany and Austria on my own this past December...and it was fabulous. I had 1 suitcase and a backpack, traveled by rail and taxi and foot. I did hook up with friends for a few days while there, but I never really felt unsafe. I don't know what areas you are traveling to, but just use common sense. I also stayed in full service hotels vs. hostels, but again, you just need to use common sense.

Here's some tips:
- 1 rolling suitcase and 1 daypack is the max you should take. I used an Eagle Creek 22" rolling pack that had an expansion zipper and backpack straps - very roomy and handy, and also had a Rick Steve's Civita daypack, which I absolutely loved. Both were durable and lightweight - a must for us ladies!
- If you are traveling so that you are arriving late at night or early in the morning - while it is dark - spend the money and get a cab.
-Always walk looking like you know what you are doing and where you are going. If you are lost, find a pharmacy, grocery or some very public everyday place to ask for directions. Check sunrise/sunset times online, as these are sometimes very different from where you are currently located.
-Purchase a combination cable lock that you can lock your luggage/pack to if you need to. I found this especially helpful on the train.
-keep purchases to a minimum. If you see something that you have to have, inquire about shipping it home. You will not want to lug items around - it will get very old, very quick!
-Research, research! Plan where you want to go, what you want to see before you leave. You will save valuable time, energy and money by doing this.

Now - since the 2 of you are wanting to do this - why not connect and travel together! Reply to this

You'll be fine!
I'm 27yr old female and spent three months in Europe on my own last year.
It's the safest part of the world to travel alone if you ask me.
Great transport, easy hostelling (I never had a problem staying in hostels alone) and if you're sensible and don't hitchhike alone or go home with strange men there should be no problems.
You'll also meet heaps of other solo travellers and have the bonus of being able to do exactly as you please each day.
Don't worry about it, just do it and you'll have a ball.
My advice would be to take minimum luggage - a pack with a zip off day pack is all you need after all - because don't forget that if you're on your own there's no one to watch your stuff at train stations etc so you need to be able to fit it all in the loo with you and be able to carry it everywhere etc. Reply to this

Hi, Katie and Tati
Ok, I'm a guy so now you will get the male perspective. GO FOR IT! Have fun! I also travel solo in Europe alot (4 out of the last 5 years, and going again this year). I remember having breakfast one morning with this tiny quiet little Japanese girl who was travelling solo. I thought, "If she can do it, anyone can do it."
You will be surprised how many solo travellers there are. As a solo male traveller I've spent parts of my trips with other solo travellers of both genders and made great friends. They were situations where I just happened to be travelling in the same direction as someone else and we would decide to "buddy up".
I've made great friends that way that I still visit, or keep in touch with. For someone your age, I would recommend at most, 2 packs: One big one which will basically be your "getting from point A to point B" pack, and a day pack. It's heavier than a rolling case for sure, but I can't tell you the number of times, I have managed to just barely make it onto a train, and I'm sure that if I had a rolling case, there was no way I would've made it. Plus I've seen many females doing the two back pack bit. I do it myself. When you are ready to travel to the next town, the big one goes on your back and the day pack you strap in front of you. This one is where you carry your valuables too, since it will be in front of you and know one can sneak up on you and take anything like documents, camera, etc. from you. Wow I talk alot.
feel free to ask me any questions, and have fun.

Regards

Hi there i'm also traveling alone this summer from june 30 to october 30, 2007.

I did something major spontaneous i quit my job and bought a plane ticket to euro. I was thinking of only going for 2 months in sept/oct but then on a limb at the travel place i went for 4 months. I'm going to backpack and hostel it.

Does anyone want to meet up and travel together? I'm getting a eurail pass and plan on hitting 16 of the 18 possible contries (excluing romania and ireland).

Into a little partying but mostly seeing sights and beaches and having fun! Reply to this

I'm 21 years old and I traveled alone all the time by myself when I lived in Europe (I was there for 9 months). You just really have to use common sense when you travel alone that's all. I'd recommend that you stay in hostels, which is what I did, and you'll meet lots of people there and it won't be so lonely that way. Besides, Europe is very safe (you're safer here than anywhere else believe me) and you will meet many a friendly traveler. Just use common sense, don't put yourself in a situation you don't want to put yourself in and have fun! At first I didn't want to travel alone but I had no choice and I loved it! One great thing about it is that you can do what you want to do on your own time and when you want to and you can go where you want to go. Just try it and see if you like it, but if you don't want to travel by yourself, that's alright too. It's not that scary believe me! I was hesitant about doing that myself like you are, but I've been there done that and I'm glad and happy that I traveled anyways. So if you can't find someone to travel with, what the hay go ahead and travel by yourself it that's what you want to do! Good luck and happy travels and whatever you decide enjoy yourself! Thanks for all of the great advice! I unfortunately have to postpone my trip for a bit, cause I don't have enought money saved. I want to be able to be thrifty but not have to watch the budget so carefully that I miss stuff. Hopefully in the spring or next fall I'll go for a few months! And who knows, maybe I can save up for a longer trip 😊

Thanks again! Reply to this

I am right now in the middle of my euro backpacking trip. and having a blast! i did 1 week in london, then 3 weeks with distant relativies in holland (not everyone gets this priviledge of course.) but then i headed to groningen, holland, to stay in a hostel. my first weekend i already ran into another traveler my age, from austria. we have headed to bremen and hamburg. he knows german so that really helps. we will travel for about a week togther then he leaves for school, and i will see where to go next! but that is how it works i think as you move around alone you will find, as stated by Danielle S, many a friendly traveler. and be openminded to see all the little cities that are off the beaten track, that is where the most fun and adventure is! Hi, i'm 25 and i'm planning to travel around europe by EURAIL... i was thinking abt taking the night trains so i could travel in d day and also save on accommodation... any suggestions?? is it alright to travel alone at nite??? Reply to this

Yes, I think it is fine. When you travel by train they have shelves that are high up on the wall for you to put your bags. It's pretty hard for someone to try to get into your stuff without you waking up. You won't be sleeping that deeply...especially on a moving train. Have fun. Reply to this

I've heard there are rules and restrictions at them, but that they are pleasant. I've heard that often only females can stay at them, but I'm not sure. Reply to this

ok, Good. So you live in UK, and I'm assuming you live in the city, so you're no stranger to a variety of different people. Use your judgement. I live in Los Angeles. I find that it's pretty easy to tell what peoples intentions are. I also found that I have rarely had anyone try to take anything from me. Also when I travel, I enjoy myself to the fullest, but there is also a small part of me that is always being watchful I carry very few things that are very valuable...only my camera, and I'm always aware of where that is! Documents...tickets, passport and money...I NEVER have that stuff in a vulnerable place. You are travelling in Western Europe, which I don't think you will find extremely foreign. I was just there about 4 months ago. Holland, Belgium, France...before heading to Germany and Eastern Europe, which I'm more familiar with. I found the Western European countries to be not so terribly different the the U.S.

I think you'll be fine! Reply to this
