Trying to choose between Spain and Italy.

So I have a week of vacation(in January) and found great vacation packages for southern Spain and the Amalfi Coast.
In Spain I want to see Seville, Granada, and Cordoba. In Italy I want to see the Amalfi Coast and Naples. I dont care to go to shopping. Im going for scenic views, great cuisine, and to soak up some culture. Which destination would be better in your opinion? Also any tips/or suggestions would be awesome! Thanks!
I would love to go when the weather is better but Im in college and I work so the times I would like to go I cant. During summers I have to do internships. So I have to go in January before school starts back.

Ive only been to Barcelona but Im in Italy (Florence at the moment) and I do love Italy so much more. But that is my taste and I cant explain why, but I think the people here are alot friendlier and that helps. But the coffee in Spain is awesome...... Reply to this

I would definitely suggest you to go to Italy. And especially the Amalfi-coast. You really have to have been there. It truly is an amazing place to spend your vacation. Also if you need an accommodation I can make a suggestion.

Check out the Holiday-Velvet website. www.holiday-velvet.com

This is a company that is specialised in finding the perfect accommodation for your stay. They are active in a lot of popular holiday locations, including the Amalfi coast.

Finding an accommodation here will only make your vacation more unforgettable..!!!! Reply to this

I am usually very critical with my country, indeed I prefer France and the UK, but at least Italy is way better than Spain. I sail a lot around the South Thyrrenian, and I probably know every single bay around, but if you want to make the trip of a lifetime, forget the Amalfi Coast. Yes, visit Naples being VERY VERY careful, take a bus and spend some time (less than a day) along the Amalfi Coast, but find a base in Salerno, a delightful, safe and lively city with excellent trattorias (small restaurants: go to La Cipolla The Onion). But then go to the Aeolian Islands, N of Sicily, that you can reach with a ferry from Naples. Check my entry about Stromboli. The most amazing Island in the world. Beware, all the area is pretty much dead in January except the cities, so bring books. But food is at its best. let me know if you need infos

Sorry of the topic, Im in Naples right now, why would you say be very very careful. I just got here today, and it does seem a bit more dangerous then Florence already, but if you could advice me on certain things Ill try and be more careful. Thanks Reply to this

Marilyn,

never carry valuables, try to look poor, agree the price with taxis BEFORE and/or always carry change because they never have any, avoid dodgy areas, never trust hotels (they set tourist up), use the hotel safe but ask for a receipt of what you deposit, see what you want to see and get away. Naples people are among the best in the world, but the underground Naples is too powerful. Don't stay too much. Apart from that, have fun. Reply to this

sorry still off the topic. In your opinion if Im staying out of Naples (im in the suburbs i suppose) would that be safer. So far they seem to be really friendly here but then again I just happen to come on a day when they celebrate some saint so everyone is in a festive mood. How about the surrounding areas, like capri and pompeii? Just want an opinion before something bad happens. Thanks Reply to this

I don't want to alarm you too much. People in Naples is amazingly friendly but take the basic precaustions seriously. There are many, many poor people around and their intentions are not always friendly. Point is that pickpocketers and con-men go where tourists go, but if you leave your belongings in a safe place and go around with just what you need for the day, you should be fine. Capri is great, but go to Procida as well. Amalfi coast is worth a quick look, but I'd still get the ferry and go the Aeolian island. That is safe, incredible and unique magic (Stromboli and Salina). You'll never regret that

Thanks a lot Mark! Great info you gave me. Yes I have heard good things about Capri, I havent heard of Procida or the Aeolian Island. Everyone raves about how great and beautiful the Amalfi Coast is. I know a definetely want to go to Italy most people say its a lot better than Spain. AND you sail! That must be so awesome I cant wait to learn how to sail so I can have my own boat one day. Thanks again Mark. Oh you Italian men are hot 😉 Reply to this

no worries, girls. Now that I remember, there are places you absolutely have to go to, better than Capri and Ischia: PONZA and VENTOTENE, probably some of the best islands around (after the Aeolian). Catch a train to FORMIA, from where fast hydrofoils go there. I have some sailboats sailing around all the areas from Salerno, Amalfi Coast, Capri and Ponza, for a honest fee, still not a budget fee (around 450 euros a week per person). Let me know if I can help
