Trans Siberian Rolls Royce

A summer trip in 2008 driving a Silver Shadow Rolls Royce from London to Mongolia, and possibly to Beijing if permitted

I'm wondering if anyone out there would be interested in joining myself and a fit elder lady on this drive?

The trip is planned for the summer months of June to September and will follow the Trans Siberian Highway from Moscow to Ulan Ude on the south east side of Lake Baikal, then south into Mongolia.

The initial section will be from Kent, UK, across the Channel and then through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and thence to St.Petersburg and Moscow.

We are looking for people with a sense of adventure and the ability to understand this sort of trip undertaken in a beautiful vehicle across some very inhospitable terrain, intelligent, relaxed and lovers of wild places.

This trip will not involve nightclubs, thronging crowds or noisy places when possible, the ability to be at one with the wild and to be respectful of the peace and tranquility of such places is important

Last year I did this trip in reverse by jumping from place to place on planes, and have dreamed of this road trip for some time.

The costs of such a trip in terms of fuel consumption and preparation of the vehicle are high, so we will be staying at secure but cheap hostels or hotels along the way, normally just outside of towns to keep prying eyes away from the Rolls, and where there may be secure parking.

There will be a daily travelling charge to guests, (i.e. not when we stay in towns for a few days) , but this will not be excessive for the priilege of sitting in a very well cared for 'Roller' driving across the Gobi desert, for example.

What we would like to have is a guest or two for certain legs of the trip, where they could arrive by plane and join for so long and then return from another airport further down the track. (e.g. Fly to St.Pete, 2 days driving time over four days to Moscow, and then fly back from Moscow)

European legs, such as through the Baltic States would also be very interesting.

Such a trip in such a vehicle has never been attempted before, mostly it's 4 WDs or big off road bikes, but the road is not as bad as some would think, it only really gets bad if you continue on to Vladivostok from Ulan Ude, and that section should also be finished soon.

Anyway, I've just joined this forum and would like feedback from fellow adventurers, even if they are not able to join.

Let me know what you think....... Reply to this

Hey Mike,

What a great idea! Fantastic!!!... I'm sure in no time, you will receive replies from many who's interested. I'm one for sure. I just bought the Lonely Planet Trans Siberia, and i'm planning to travel from where i am now, Malaysia all the way to South Africa and back. DOing a full loop in the GREAT CONTINENT without flying. I'm leaving in 10days to South America for a few months of backpacking just to get a taster of what it's like to travel on my own. As soon as i get back from South America, i would be leaving for this TRANS GREAT CONTINENT. So, your date of departure in 2008 might just be the right time for us to meet, if we are meant to?!?.. Count me in for adventure travelling involving no nightclubs. Keep me posted!!.. Reply to this

Thanks for the first reply ericisa, I did my backpacking around 30 years ago, that was enough for me, I'd rather drag a suitcase through the dirt behind me than put the hot sticky thing on my back again!!!
You also have a great trip planned, let me know when you're in the trans sib region and Ill maybe be able to help, I met many expats on the route and stayed in quite a few hostels, all of which were good. Don't even think about missing Lake Baikal, you should spend at least two weeks in that area, it's unbelievably far away from anything and everything, I can sit and watch the waters all day long (provided I have a good beer supply!)
Good luck and I'll be following your adventures Reply to this
