Hello everyone,
I am planning to go on a short hiking vacation in Greece on early April.
I read about the Zagori area and the Pindus mountains. My questions are:
1. Will the weather be suitable for hiking? What levels of snow should I expect?
2. Are there any good maps of the area available (1:50000)? Are the trails marked?
3. Is it possible to reach the summits of the massif?
4. What are my options for accommodations and supply?
5. Any other general suggestions for a 6-7 days trek in this area?
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks a lot!
Itai
Reply to this Hello, havent done any trekking in Zagoria. Early April is indeed early in the season, weather is unpredictable, there will be snow on the mountains still. I doubt you can make it to the summits at this time of the year, without special equipment and experience. The area is well developed for tourism but do check out before you go that hotels etc are open. There is a Greek mountaneering society which should have all the information you need. Or you can search for a guide in the area on the web, I would suggest you get in touch with local people to find out if it is advisable at all to try this. Greek mountains can be very inhospitable, so be careful. Best maps are found at the company Anavasi. The area is lovely even if you cant climb the mountains.
