I will be traveling to England (currently a citizen of the U.S)and want to obtain a working visa. What visa do I get and for how long can I work for (I have a degree)? Also, I know it is expensive to live in London, any other suggestions on cities to live and work?
Reply to this Hi there,
I recommend going to http://www.workpermit.com/ ... it is a great website and should have all the information you require.
I also recommend a book called 'Work your way around the world' ... you should be able to find it on Amazon!

Guess that depends what you want to do for a living. You could go live in like... Holt and work on a farm, in a factory, a pub or ummmm... ??? Well, that's all I can think of.
Seriously though, you'll want to do plenty of research, know what you want to do, and what the job market is like in each area for the career field you're looking at... much like a job anywhere else.
Reply to this I first had posted the message about working in england but never logged in--I have been on every visa website and can not seem to get a straight answer even on the phone, I can't get through to anyone. I think it is the Worker Registration Scheme I need to apply for but I still don't know?? Then there is the highly skilled scheme which I am not sure I am eligible for. I work as a Marketing Director now and would like to continue in the Marketing Field. Any more help would be much appreciated-answers for U.S. citizens wanting to work in England!!??

Reply to this As far as I know - the way the system works in practice is that you need to find someone willing to employ you in the UK. Once you have this the employer will be able to find something that allows you to work based on a skilled migrant program or other scheme. (Possibly involving exagerating part of your skill set to ensure you qualify). Doing this independently is next to impossible.
The Americans I've met in the UK working have all either worked cash in hand (illegally!) bar working etc - or known someone prior to going.
So it's a tough one!
All I can suggest is that you search for UK jobs that are advertised in US sites/papers - they'll be prepared for a US applicant and have everything set up for getting the Visas sorted for the right applicant.
Reply to this hiya. im not sure of your situation (university and age wise) but there is a work visa called a blue card which will allow you to work here. check out this site: www.studentuniverse.com and www.bunac.com both of them should help you out.
Reply to this hi,
you if you are intended to work in UK, you should have work permit.there are 6 types of it. there is also a possibility to live and work in the United Kingdom without work permit.
All this is indicated here
