Choosing Flights

Should I be choosing a return flight or a one way flight?

I plan on leaving to backpack in Europe for approximately two months, but I don't know if I should take a one way flight or a return flight. What if I decide to stay longer than originally planned or decide to come home earlier? When I looked at flights, a one way seemed more expensive than a return flight. Any help on this issue would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Crista and welcome to the Forum!

Generally, return flights are cheaper, and if you are able to buy a flexible flight that has a long validity (say 12 months) than that is a great bonus. The only minus with flexible flights is that they are more expensive - you pay for the convenience of being able to change your mind. You need to check the conditions of the fare you are purchasing and/or ensure that you have a flexible flight with the travel agent. Also, sometimes you can change flights with cheaper fares, but you will incur an extra fee - try to be aware of how much this change will cost.

However, London is one of the great cities for purchasing cheap one way flights, so it may be more cost effective to purchase a one-way from your home and then purchase the return once you get to Europe.

Hope this helps!
