Where to Celebrate Birthday 11-11-11 in Crete/Southern Greece?

Aloha Everyone! Curious if anyone out there could give me some travel advice.. I am trying to make last minute plans to travel to Crete/Southern Greece in November for 2 weeks... Luckily I just got some free time and have always wanted to visit Greece... coincidentally it will also be my birthday on November 11.. so I'm hoping to maybe find a local festival or some kind of event to help commemorate the birthday 😊 I'm open to any and all suggestions? .... Initially looking for places to visit with relatively warm weather for winter, local festivals or events during November, then of course cheap lodging, archaeological sites, natural parks, art exhibits, things to climb on, people to meet, food to nibble, where to rent bicycles 😊 Any Advice is Helpful!

Thank You
Crickett

Hi there, November in Greece is an uncertain month as regards weather. Right now it is raining and quite cold (about 17 C). But weather may also be sunny and warm. Difficult to know beforehand. I think Crete is your best bet. Athens is right now in the grip of strikes making any trip more an ordeal than a pleasant holiday. But in Crete we don't notice too much. Be aware that the tourist season is over, many of the resorts have closed for winter. But Crete has several cities/towns, Chania is the nicest, Heraklion the most dynamic. Rethymnon, Sitia, Ag. Nikolaos, Ierapetra all have their own charm, though much smaller. I think lodging willl be cheap, there are lot's of nature to explore, and archaelogical sites are plentiful. 11 November is actually the day of the patron saint of Heraklion, but apart from a special mass I don't think much else happens (the shops will be closed that day, but cafes and restaurants will be open). I can't really think of anywhere with a festival at this time of year, you may still enjoy it though. I think you can spend 3-4 days each in Chania and Heraklion, and do day trips to the interesting places. Maybe going down to the south for another 3-4 days, the weather is much better there, and you should be able to swim. Palaiochora, Sougia, Matala, Plakia are some places one can suggest, but be aware that it will be fairly "closed" in these smaller places at this time of the year. Biking in Crete is not so common, and you probably need to contact a tour agency to arrange that, although in Heraklion one can rent bikes and ride along the harbour front, but maybe that is not what you are thinking of. There is a good bus network, although a rented car is always a nice way to get to those special places. Reply to this
