I have one month to spend in Europe this spring, from March 16-April 16. I'll be in Dublin for St. Patrick's day, after which point I have no firm plans. I'm interested in purchasing a Eurail pass to travel around Europe. I want to see a lot, so the Eurail 1 month Youth pass sounds like a good deal, but I have some questions:
How much should I expect to pay for train tickets on top of the Eurail pass? On a europe rail site, I was informed that a ticket from Paris-Madrid costs 30 US Dollars even with a Eurail pass. Obviously this is heavily discounted from the list price of ~200 US dollars, but I thought the Eurail pass would make the trip free. Is this scenario the rule or the exception?
What will availability be like? Should I book in advance, or, if I wake up in Venice and decide to go to Vienna, can I just go to the train station and get on a train. Should I make reservations a few days in advance in order to secure a spot on the train?
