hi...i want to travel to siros and i was wondering if there are any suggestions for restauraunts and places to go???
Reply to this Hi Udine, I haven't been to Syros but as I live in Greece I can give some general advice. It is a nice island, with an interesting town with houses in the so called neo-classical style, many of which have been nicely renovated. You probably want to explore it and then head off to the various beaches. Not much else to do there. It is popular with Greeks too, for the well-to-do middle class, so it is not very cheap. If you go in September it will be cheaper and should be easy to find accommodation. Restaurants - remember that fish is very expensive in Greece. Beach front is usually more expensive than in the back streets. Of course the trick is to check out the customers, definitely try the places where the Greeks go, because that will be where the best food is but avoid the flashy places, that can be VERY expensive. Coffee and drinks in cafeterias and bars are expensive, comparably. If you are on a budget try the kebab places or make a picnic lunch with bread, feta and tomatoes from the supermarket. Enjoy your trip.
Reply to this Hiiii....thank you for the nice advices...they are very helpfull...i am thinking of going at the end of Octomber...will i be able to swim then or the water will be cold??...since you are from Greece i was wondering which island do you think is the best for visit??Thanks a lot again..
Reply to this End of October is end of the tourist season in Greece. Syros is however an island where people live and work and not just come there for serving the tourists, so even at that time it should be OK to go there. If you can swim - difficult question, sometimes it is a wonderful time for swimming, sometimes it is rainy and not very pleasant. Usually it is still quite warm and the sea keeps warm well into November, even December most years. And compared to the summer the sweltering heat is gone, which is a big plus if you want to travel round or hike.
I would suggest Crete as an alternative, it is a much bigger island, chances of good weather are better, and even if you can't go swimming there are several towns to visit, Heraklion the busy capital, Chania and Rethymnon with a Venetian flavour, Agios Nikolaos with a pretty lake. But there are lot's of places to visit whichever interests you have. Easy to get around with the local bus network (called KTEL) or by rented car.
Reply to this Thank you so much for the usefull information...you helped me a lot and i am really considering going to Crete instead of Siros.....
Reply to this Hi, Crete for sure is better choice for vacation compared to Siros. It is the biggest island in Greece and there you can admire amazing beaches and lovely mountains. There are several towns where you can stay, for example Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion. Each one of the cities has its own remarkable attractions. If you need more information you can check this website <snip>. Good idea is also to book your hotel in advance. Crete is an island very popular among the tourists visiting Greece and for this reason it can be difficult to find a hotel room available especially if you visit it in the high season. I can recommend you to use online hotel booking websites like <snip>. Sometimes they offer good hotel deals if you book in advance.
