Advice for those who travel to Moscow

I just visited Moscow. Moscow is great, very nice place to visit. I was lucky to stay in the cheap apartment in the center. I made a list of some advice for those who gonna travel there:
All signs in Moscow are written in Russian. So you might find it hard to read Russians letters and feel confident. My advice is please bring with you a small phrasebook to Russia and at least try to learn some Cyrillic. Another problem is of course VISA and registration. Do you know that staying in one city in Russia for the period for more then 3 days requires registration? Otherwise you can be fined or robbed by Russian officials. Police usually checks passports on the streets, so please do not forget to carry it with you and be ready to show your registration. By the way I found a lot of useful information about moscow at Moscow Site Reply to this

This problem with getting a registration is only if you're staying at friends or apartment. I've booked nice 3* hotels in Moscow and StPete and got the registration automatically.
In MOscow was staying at Maxima Zarya, got 10%!I(MISSING)SIC discount (!) - their website
Police never stopped me, maybe because I'm a female 😊) Reply to this

Most street signs in Moscow are written in Russian and English and many important signs - airports etc are also in both languages. You will also find many other signs that are combinations - English words in Russian that you can often work out as well, but knowing some Russian letters would help. One of the best books around is the small Lonely Planet pocket guide - small but good information.

This post indicates where you are from Chris, so for flights look at Thai Airways (although their partner airlines are not as reliable) and Emirates. Emirates have the best service to Moscow from Oz - from Melbourne and Perth (one stop in Dubai only) and offer great quality and reliability. Emirates will get booked out, so book early.

Visa registration is not a problem in Moscow as hostels can assist you and anybody renting out apartments can usually assist you as well - we provide that service and others do as well. In other smaller cities it can be more difficult, but the 3 day rule is 3 working days and it does not include the day you arrive, so if you are only in a city for 2 days, then registration is not essential - but you need to get registration somewhere, usually your first port of call.

Passport checks on the street I read about all the time, but in the 2 1/2 years I have lived in Moscow and on my previous trips to Russia, I have never been asked for my passport once by the Militsia (Police). That being said, it is best to have your registration done as if it is not done properly, you will have difficulties leaving the Country and whatever you do, do not lose the piece of white paper that has your registration - it is your exit visa in effect. I staple mine to the visa page of my passport carefully so it cannot be lost and then unstaple before giving it to customs when I leave the country.

Hotels in Moscow - even cheap ones you will need to book in advance as you willl often find that they have no vacancies.
