Europe in January

Thoughts on traveling in Europe during Winter.

I was looking for some opinions on traveling in Europe during January. I'm finishing school in December and January just happens to be the most opportune time for me to take a trip around Europe. I've been to Europe previously in November, and found the weather quite bearable, however I'm wondering if January will be too cold. Any thoughts on the matter will be appreciated. I'm from Poland, and all I know is that it get pretty cold. Where in Europe are you going though...it depends...the temperature in Greece will obviously not be the same as it is in Germany or Poland during January...

Europe is fine in winter. I did a semester from Jan-April in Italy. It was slightly humid cold which did chill down to the bones but its not that bad (and I've come from -30 situations in Canada). Dress warmly, bring mitts and a hat and you'll be fine. There are sunny days and its not all grey and gloomy. I found travelling in winter awesome as there's significantly less tourists. You don't have to wait in line at museums, less people to block your view when you're taking pictures...
Keep in mind that winter is the off season for Europe so if you're planning on visiting places that are tourist-dependent they may look like shells of their former selves. If you're planning on hitting up Greek islands, a lot of the services are shut down for the season as the proprietors fly back to Athens for the winter. I think ferry service may reduced between the islands.

Hey thanks for the responses. I'm planning on visiting some friends in Hamburg and Paris. I'm told it might snow in Paris, I was just wondering if it would be too cold to walk about the city and what not. Since I'm coming from California, the weather difference will be quite drastic. But the tickets deal are too cheap to resist. Reply to this

I think you would be fine in winter. You would just get a different perspective of Europe (your pictures might have that snowy look to them). I hit up Paris I think right after New Years. Be prepared for a bit of snow. I would suggest bringing a windproof (maybe goretex) jacket if you don't care about being fashionable and stylish, some warm sweaters and decent shoes with a rubber sole that can handle the slippery pavement (wet from the rain of sleet). Winter should be a great time if you love to travel! You will have great access to accomidations because of the low tourists. Just bring your jacket and meet some locals!

Hi!

I think it´s a good idea to come to europe in the winter. In most of the cities is a good atmosphere. In all big streets are lights on the houses or around the trees. You have so much cafes to sit in and join coffee or tea or whatever you like.

Important is to wear a warm jacket and good shoes. Cold feet are horrible. ;-)

So, I wish you a good time in Europe. Enjoy it.
