Hi all, I'm a 23 yo guy from Australia. I am heading to South America and I'm planning travel alone for the first time ever. Have always been a bit scared and worried of the idea but it all sounds so good at the same time. I'm starting off in Rio Brazil, and hopefully staying for up to 3-4 months and just want to do and see as much adventurous stuff as possible in that time. Just wondering if anyone is going to be around Rio in late September this year just having a good time while ur there? Any tips?

Hi there,

I was there in June this year and I waited 3 years to got to South America until I finally convined some of my non-travelling friends to come with me (they loved it!). Although I usually travel on my own, I didn't want to go to South America by myself. But when I was there I realised it was no more dangerous than other places I had been. We ended up spiltting up to do different stuff and meeting up again. So goodluck to you if you go by yourself, you will meet heaps of friends along the way, we met quite a few people doing solo trips.

Also just wanted to recommend Ipanema Beach House Hostel in Rio - they organise transfers from the airport (if thats your first stop) and was a really nice hostel in a great beach location. It is a bit noisy before they kick everyone out of the bar at 11pm, but the staff are really friendly and helpful, the place is clean, lots of cheap eats nearby and good outdoor bar at the back. Also the tours they run are done by a guy (Matthias - I think) who is a local who is sooo knowlegeable, which you wouldn't think at first meeting.... he looks like some surfer dude.

Have fun!!

Hi Hugh! I actually will be in Peru at that time. My volunteering program finishes the first week of November in Cuzco and I plan on staying around that area for a while before heading to Argentina. Where in Peru are you going? Reply to this

Hi all--I'll be heading to SA early October (solo) for several months. Would be interested having someone to travel with for a bit--especially if your interested in renting a car or small motorhome (I did this with random solo travelers in Rwanda and Uganda and it was the highlight of my RTW trip...). No set itin, but thinking having wheels would be amazing...lmk if interested. Reply to this
