Info re Rail Passes needed.
Hi all,
I am heading to Eastern Europe in September and I will be in the region for 45 days. I fly into Budapest and out of Vienna. I hope to travel to 5 countries in that time.
What rail passes are the best bang for the buck? Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!
Reply to this Hi Lesley,
It depends on your route, but rail passes are barely ever worth it in Eastern Europe. Anywhere central/east (besides Austria and Germany) its always cheaper to buy tickets as you go than buy the interrail/eurail passes.
Whereabouts are you planning to go? Which 5 countries?
Reply to this Hi,
Ya, I did a quick internet search and I was surprised how expensive passes were. I was getting quotes from $350 to $500+ which seems like I lot! I would rather not spend that much. I was hoping there were some better value passes out there but it doesn't look like it.
I want to go to Hungary, Croatia, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria (maybe switch one for Romania).
Reply to this Yeah, so definitely not worth it. If you're going to do a LOT of travelling in Austria it might be worth getting their one country pass, but if you just want to pass through Vienna and the southeast then it's not. Buy tickets as you travel, also if you ever decide on a particular route you're going to take, you can buy one ticket for that whole route and save money - international tickets are valid for a month and you can stop anywhere you like along the route.
There's a company called "Wasteels" who I recommend using to buy international tickets while you're out there, they have offices in various stations, including Keleti station in Budapest, they know what they're talking about (regular ticket clerks often don't when it comes to complex international tickets), they speak good English obviously, and don't have any extra fees or anything.
Reply to this Perfect, I will check them out.
Thank so much for your advice.
