Travel Companion(s) for Asia Backpacking Adventure

Looking to travel to Asia in later months of 2010, potentially (but not necessarily limited to) including Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan & Mainland China.

I'm a straight 23 year old single white male... but more importantly, easy going - but not to be taken advantage of or too chill to let my guard down. Trustworthy - but also demanding of somebody equally so. That would be my most important aspect of a traveling companion. I don't care what color your skin is, if you are a man or a woman, if your deeply religious or not. I need to know that you respect yourself, and that you would respect me. To watch eachothers backs - in little matters, and in big, in rough crowds and in fun scenes. I don't need somebody to hold my hand - just a companion. Somebody who is comfortable being alone - or being in a crowd. I don't wish to be a liability to anybody - or travel with somebody who is a liability to me. But there is adversity in traveling - and it is priceless to have somebody you can rely on. We would strive to stay safe, while still taking some risks that are inevitable in an adventure. Somebody strong - more importantly of strong mind, but also of strong body. Preferably between the ages of 18 and 35.

I have saved up for this trip on my own, I will fully pay my own way. I am looking for somebody who has the time and means to join me for part of or all of the trip. As of now I have no set itinerary and am open to suggestions. I am looking to spend roughly 2 months in Asia, potentially a little more or a little less. I will be on a moderate budget, which is to say i'm looking to stay mostly in hostels but also with the means to splurge when necessary or when the opportunity is right for more luxurious accommodations.

I am open to eating a wide variety of food - and food would definitely be a very important part of this trip. I am a moderate drinker - I like to kick back and have a few beers. I'm thinking, Anthony Bourdain style - toned down a bit. But also I understand that keeping a level head is important, especially when traveling abroad - as you never want to be an easy target for crime. I don't smoke, and also won't entertain the idea of using any illegal drugs or soliciting prostitution while in Asia. I would like to avoid doing anything that could land us in prison.

My travel history is limited, I have traveled around the U.S.A. and Europe. That's about it. Now i'm looking for something more exciting. Why Asia? Why not? It just calls to me. Amazing history and culture, so many great sights, sounds, tastes, I get excited every time I think of it!

I live in Hawaii but am planning to head out to Seattle for a few weeks (maybe mid August to early September.) So if you happen to live in Seattle area, and you are interested in meeting up and discussing the possibility of a trip, cool.

But now days, with worldwide communication so easy... I would entertain the possibility of going with somebody from anywhere really. I only speak English, unfortunately, but i'll definitely to my best to learn some basics of the languages wherever we go. If you speak any Asian languages, that would be awesome, either way I believe in the ability to make do.

So... if this interests you and you are of like mind to most of what I said... please let me know.

Best Wishes,

Hey man! I'm a 22 y/o male college student from Iowa (lol, I know), and I'm gonna be doing a similar trip this fall. I'm volunteering in Chennai, India from September 10th-October 9th. After that, I'm gonna backpack around India for a month. I'm pretty much going from the southern tip to the northern tip, then I'm meeting a friend November 10th in Delhi, and we are flying from to SE Asia. We're spending a week in Bangkok, 2 days in Cambodia and a week in Vietnam, then flying back to the states. We're connecting in Seoul, and we have a 12 hour layover, so that'll be a fun/ridiculous day too lol. If this sounds like something you're interested in, feel free to hit me up:

Sounds like a fun trip you have planned, thanks for the response. I don't have any plans to travel to India at this time. I will definitely be visiting Bangkok & Vietnam. Right now it looks like I will be flying into Manila from Hawaii as this is definitely the cheapest route into S.E. Asia from here. Not sure right now if I want to travel around the Philippines much alone so I am not planning much there unless I can get a surefire companion. Right now I have a *very rough draft* of possibly straight from Manila to Singapore, on to Kuala Lumpur, fly over to Kota Kinabulu to hike up Mount Kinabulu, then back to Kuala Lumpur, over to Ho Chi Minh, (insert side trips here) up to Hanoi via train, fly to Bangkok, up to Chiang Mai, (over to Laos?) and eventually hit up Hong Kong, get back to Manila and fly home... Would love to go to Shanghai too if I could get somebody to go with me. I'm still in the very early stages of planning, got my passport today though. Yay! Only took 2 weeks and I didn't even pay for expedited. Well... I don't surf or scuba - so I don't have the same drive to hit up those hotspots as some people. More of a hiker / explorer type. Anyway... might be able to meet up in Bangkok or Vietnam at some point for a few days, keep it in mind. Hope to see some more posts here from various people. Reply to this
