a brief question about train travel
14 years ago, April 2nd 2010 No: 1 Msg: #107825
Hi, i was wondering how far in advance should i book a one way train ticket from ljubljana to vienna? should i just turn up and buy a ticket for the next train available? is that risky? or should i book ahead?
i just dont want to be stuck at the train station potentially overnight with nowhere to stay!

any help would be appreciated,

thanks,

Hi Michael, you should book your ticket in advance because it's a lot cheaper, not because you'll get refused travel if the train is full (you wouldn't, by the way). Slovenian Railways do deals called "SparSchiene" to Vienna for 29 EUR one way and you can buy tickets here: http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/passengers/abroad/austria

If you don't want to book in advance, you can just turn up and buy tickets on the day and you'll be fine, but make sure you know when your train is because the connections are quite infrequent, and it will cost you 63 EUR.

They still allow passengers to stand in the corridors, but for all seats to be taken is very unlikely. It sometimes happens to me in Czech Republic when I travel back to Prague on a sunday afternoon along with all the students going back to university from home, for example, or during times like Easter Weekend. But at normal times there should be a seat available at least for most of the journey.

Ljubljana is nice but very small for a capital, it probably won't take that long to see everything in the city! Reply to this
