Your itinerary looks fine, the distances aren't that big between the places you want to visit. You dont' state what are your interests when you travel (museums, shopping, swimming or doing excursions from the cities??) but I think you should spend a couple of more days in Barcelona if you haven't visited before, as there is so much to see. I would also spend more time in Rome (definitely) and include Venice, 4 days in Nice and Naples seem a lot but it all depends of course what you want to do. Your budget may be a bit on the low side, I am especially thinking of the "other" which includes entrance fees which are quite costly and the "food" but if you stick to fast food and picnics you should probably be OK. On the other if you travel by train/coach the transportation cost will probably not be that high but if you rent a car then $1000 is a reasonable sum.
Seems like a very nice trip - enjoy.

Thanks for the feedback, Inga! We'll be traveling by train or bus. Now I'm thinking of eliminating Marseille or Nice and maybe Genova and including Venice. We'll mainly just be exploring cities on foot with a rough idea of what we want to see and trying to get lost. In Barcelona the Sagrada Familia tops our list as well as other Gaudi. I definitely want to have a food budget on the generous side. What do you suggest? Reply to this

Hello there, I am not an expert on restaurant prices but I think you have to budget around 25 euros for a decent meal, obviously it can get much more expensive than that. In Barcelona you can have tapas and in Italy there is lot's of wonderful pizza places which is quite reasonably priced. Be aware that if you sit down in cafes in Italy you pay a much higher price (sometimes extremely high) than if you have your drink at the bar.

Places to visit in and around Barcelona the old city center (Barrio Gothico) shouldn't be missed, the City Museum is a great museum where you walk around the 2000 year old ruins of the city. Montjuic is a nice park area easily reached from the center (no entrance fee), if you like art don't miss the Miro museum there. About an hour north of Barcelona is Girona, medieval city with picturesque lanes to get lost in, and nearer the border to France in Figueres is the Dali museum - even if you are not particularly keen on Dali the museum is a unique experience and the town is also worth a stroll. Another city on your route is Montpellier, it is a university city, very vibrant and has interesting architecture both traditional and modern.

Good itinerary, I like your plan...you may be short a little if you stay in hotel all the time tho.

you don't wanna stay more than two days in marseille and nice. Spent more time in Rome and Barcelona.

Last summer I spent 1 week in each town and it wasn't enough.

I really like your route, I am sure you will love it. Reply to this

Cool. Thanks so much for the feedback. We're gonna be staying in the cheapest accommodations available in the best hostels we can find. (If that makes sense.) I've already researched rates online pretty extensively so I think that part of the budget is pretty spot on. I was just about to book two nights at the Sant Jordi Diagonal hostel in Barcelona but I may book more thanks to your suggestion. 😉 Reply to this

Cool, yeah the reviews are all great. Have you by any chance spent the night in any campgrounds along the coast of france? I'm looking at some money saving options... Reply to this

yes I did, You can do it arround Nice. It good. You can also go to the hotel Belle Meuniere with their 15 euro bed.

The only thing I recommend is not spending to much time in Nice. There isn't that much to see and your itinerary is great and worth spending more time everywhere else.
