I had a very good experience staying at the River Bank Hostel. The downside is that there is no staff on-site - rather they have people at another nearby Hostel. The up-sides are that the place is huge, it is located right on the river not too far away from the Charles Bridge, and there is a fantastic authentic Czech pub-style restaurant next door that serves amazing food off of an English-language menu, even though the owner/waiter barely speaks any English.

Take a look at the River Bank Hostel website, and you can also book through Hostels.com if you prefer the security of this booking agent. Reply to this

Stay somewhere near the old town. I don't recommend hotels on Wenceslaw Square - it's quite noisy, pricey and it's not a very nice place at night. Reply to this

I'm sure you've heard about Prague Castle, the Old Town, etc. I will try and give you a few less popular options.

If you are much of a fan of natural history, you can go to the Strahov Monastery (just beside the top of the Prague Castle) to see one of the few remaining mummified Dodo birds, among other curiosities.

You can catch a marionette performance - I managed to catch a performance of the opera Don Giovanni performed by marionettes at the National Marionette Theater in the old town.

If you are looking for a day trip, you can take a train to Kutna Hora to see the Sedlec Ossuary, which is a church decorated with human bones. Not for everyone, but I found it to be a remarkable sight.

I like the old town in Prague. It's my favourite place in the city. It's lively and 100% authentic. It's also very romantic by the way! I went there for a few days with 3 friends we rented an apartment. We found it with L&V Location-et-Vacances. If you are travelling with other people I think renting an apartment is worth it. It's not very expensive in Prague!!!

What time of year are you going?

If it's not too cold, go for a walk through Stromovka park and around Troja chateau north of the bend in the river where they have pickable fresh fruit in season and some rather weird and wonderful artwork. It's a little bit outside of the city centre and feels like it as well. Prague zoo is also in this part of town which I've never been to but heard good things about.

In my opinion Petřín lookout tower shouldn't be missed, and a piece of advice I have is to take the furnicular railway down the hill, but not up it. When there are a lot of tourists around the queues to go up are huge but no one ever wants to go the other way.

If you're at all into classical music you should try and see a performance at the national theatre (narodní divadlo), just because it's so cheap and the scene in Prague is really very good.

Authentic Czech food mostly involves throwing things into a deep fryer, and can be found at most pubs. I don't have any particular places to recommend in Prague, but when looking for things like restaurants it usually helps to steer away from the touristy areas (i.e. not on old town square) if you want an authentic experience. There are some nice places tucked away down side alleys in old town and Josefov, but I'm at a loss for any names.

I also recommend Kutná Hora for the bones, but it's a bit of a dead city to be honest. The ossuary will take you the best of 30 minutes to see, and after that you can go see some other churches and cemetaries and that's it really. You could also do a day trip to Karlovy Vary, which is an old spa town with a lot of fine architecture and old roman baths.

Finally just some words of advice on things people worry about: firstly, only use taxis which have company names on the side, independent minicab drivers in Prague are horrendous for overcharging. Secondly, on the metro or tram if someone asks to check your ticket, they need to show you a brass badge with the DPP logo on, otherwise they're fake and will probably try and scam you into thinking your ticket isn't valid. If you're aware of this it will usually scare them away.

Hello!
I'll be in Prague from March 14th next year for a week and booked on Prague Square Hostel. It has really good reviews on HostelWorld.com and is located in the hearth of the Old Town.
When are you planning to go to Prague??
