For somebody coming from the UK to America, should I rent a mobile phone? If so, through who?
Reply to this I think a better deal is to buy a SIM card, insert it into your unlocked GSM phone, and you can talk for a pretty good rates. I found the site www.simcardglobal.com, which offer a dual SIM card, UK and USA numbers. That means while in the US you are getting a local US number, so all your calls in the US are kind of local calls, and best of all, incoming calls are free. So when other people are calling you, it cost you nothing. They have good rates to other countries as well. Check it out.

Reply to this You can also buy really basic mobile phone which come with a local sim and charger for about $40 through conpanies like Vodaphone. At least I bought one of those in the UK the other day for £20. Seemed perfect to me.
Reply to this Prepaid phones with the number of minutes you are willing to pay are available through many retail stores. The cost is reasonable. Once you use all the minutes either recharge the phone or toss it. Upon arrival in US, check with convenient stores as well as some retail phone companies. Many have in stock for immediate use.
Reply to this Renting a phone is not a good idea. Buy a cheap one that is good for talking and messaging. Or you may want to use a 4-band unlocked mobile! That works all around the world!

It is not good to rent a phone. You can use your own phone in America from United Kingdom(UK).But you need to have an unlocked phone.Otherwise if you have a locked phone, you can unlock it.After unlock it you can use with other network sim card in UK.So you can unlock the phone if it is locked. If your phone is an old models phones get the free unlock code from the site http://www.unlocking4free.com/ and unlock it easily. Then use with any GSM network sim card.So you can buy a local sim here in United Kingdom(UK).
