Bergamo - things to do & getting around

Has anyone been to Bergamo, Italy? Is Bergamo quite easy to get around using public transport, or is a hire care a necessity?

Also, are there any particular "attractions" or "things to do" that anyone could suggest? I'm taking my girlfriend to Bergamo for a 3-day break.

Thanks for your help! Reply to this

Hi Phil!

it is easy to get to city center from airport using public transport (There are busses every 20 minutes, it costs around 3 euros and the way takes only about 15 minutes). However Bergamo is small city although very nice and there are not so many things to do for 3 days. Therefore I suggest you to take car hire to go round and see other places near Bergamo (e.g. Brescia, Verona - my favourite italian city, Mantova or Milan). Reply to this

I have spent about 4 weekend breaks in bergamo - and I love it!

Bergamo is a beautiful city - great place to base yourself - and take an odd day trip here and there!

Very easy acccess to Milan - train - roughly 45 minutes. We even did Venice in September for a day -bit of a trek though!

I would definately recommend Lago Iseo - take the local bus to Iseo - then take a ferry around Lake Iseo - its so beautiful!

Cita Alta (high Bergamo) is worth a visit - lovley place to lunch and wander around!

I would definately recommend Bergamo for a short (3 night break) and will definately be back!

Ciao Phil,

Teh citta' alta (highest part of the city) is for sure more attractive than the lower part (more modern and confusing).
So if you can, try to stay in the "citta' Alta" part of the city whre you will visit nice churches, squares and medieval buildings.

If you are looking for someting more romantic, than I suggest to spend your day in the surrounding areas Brescia (very close to bergamo by train). In particular Lake Iseo, Lake Garda, Franciacorta.
In Franciacorta you may do some very nice wine tours as this area is famous world wide for having soem of the mosta famous italians wines (Franciacorta is the king!).

Always by taking the train you may visit Verona. The city center is wuite nice.

I am going to add a nice video of this areas on my profile, so take a look and let me know!
