Here's the difference betweem Prague and say Frankfurt. Two years ago we spent 2 weeks in Germany the last night we stayed outside Frankfurt, we aranged for a cab to pick us up at 5am to go to the airport. Cab was right on time, at the airport I had a 50 euro bill, the fare was about 23 euro I told the driver to keep the change cause I didn't want to hassle with changing euros to dollars. The driver actually said No it's your money and didn't want to keep the extra euros. Reply to this

"Its because Czech Republic is pretty much owned by Russian Maffia, and they have the police in their back pockets. So I believe Prague is actually more dangerous than a lot of other cities, although I'm not naive to the fact that there is crime everywhere...Czech Republic is pretty corrupt."
sure, it's not because of Czech thieves, petty and large, someone else is to blame, Russians... these Czechs who stole from people, they did it because of Russians, yeah Reply to this

We must have missed out somehow. We spent a week travelling in and out of Prague every day from a nearby small town in May/June last year. Some days I had a lap top in my backpack and all of the time I had a camera and other stuff. I have a strong suspicion that we looked like tourists. On one or, perhaps, two occasions we travelled late on the train after a nice dinner and a nice bottle of wine. No problems at all.

Of course the lap top and camera and anything valuable wasn't our there on show either.

We will probably be robbed at some stage but, so far, through most of Asia, Africa and Europe the most dramatic problem - of the robbery kind - was a bloke in a market nearby being pickpocketed. The thief was chased and the money that had been hanging out of the pocket of the victim was returned. Perhaps it is better to be aware than worried? Reply to this

Have just been stolen things from the hostel in the city centre of Prague...my advice - dont leave ANYTHING in the hostel room - we were stolen by one person from the room - because only people with the key could get to the room, we cant prove it unfortunately...
They even stole our clothes - jacket, trousers, bagpack...i.ve never before put those things to the locker - now i will be. Not have to mention that our trip to Prague will leave bad memories only. For your advice : MIND YOUR BELONGINGS at ALL TIME - store things in the lockers - dont leave anything on the floor, under the bed - dont live there bags, rucksacks, camera.
Always demand lockers from hostel staff. We didnt get them - they said - they dont have spare ones. Reply to this

Wow I have been in Prague twice once in July and the second a few days ago in September and I never had any problems. I hear that Prague is bad guess I blended in or they knew I didn't have anthing on me. Plus my bag in so deep that I have a hard enough time find anything in there so good luck to them. Wow.. I can't believe that so many people have had such bad experiences in Prague. I've been there 3 times now and I've never had a problem. I was there on a trip with some friends a number of years ago - my first time there and I thought that the people, like most Europeans, that we met could be unfriendly untill you get to know them. Other than that we never had a problem - even though most of my group were students and only in Prague to get really drunk.

I also lived there for 3 months and I never had a problem, even working and living in opposite sides of the city, and working untill quite late in the nights (I worked in a bar). Walking home at night was never a problem - even though I was a girl and walking alone late at night..

I hope that those of you who've had a bad experience will visit Prague again and give it another chance! 😊 Reply to this

Well, I guess it is the same with almost all cities in Eastern Europe. You should be aware of taxis, and always try to work out with licensed cab companies with set prices. Of course, that does not serve as a guarantee either, but the risk of getting robbed is smaller. When it comes to restaurants they will try to trick you as well, so it is worth being careful, and always control the prices at the menus compared to what they give you at the bill.

When it comes to pickpockets it isn't bad at all in <snip> Prague, Budapest and so on, compared to cities like <snip> Barcelona and so on in the Southern part of Europe.

And, do not skip Prague and Budapest because of some bad stuff that has happened to some people. These cities are beautiful, and I would not miss any of them for the world!!

indeed, and Western Europe is all Paradise? Try Spain, Portuguese, Italy and Nice (Cote D'Azur), and you will
see much worse. It's all Eastern Europe, indeed, yes, oui, ja, racist Reply to this

Moderator comment: Free speech can be used or abused. This thread topic is at least verging on abuse.
For this reason, I am locking it now. Those who want to have a more balanced discussion about crime and danger in various travel destinations can feel free to start a new thread. If a new thread is started, keep in mind, that an incident does not prove a theory. Reply to this
