Advise needed for Bavaria/Austria road trip

We (7 of us) are flying to Munich next month and planning our trip by road. So far, our plan is to do
Munich->Prague(via?)->Vienna(Via?)->Melk->Linz->Salzburg->Innsbruck->Fussen->Munich. We have 13 days to do the trip.

We have no clue as to how many days to spend in each location, what to see, what would be a very scenic route to take if travelling by car, etc. Should we spend more time in Germany or Austria. Of course, we'll be seeing the famous Neuschwanstein castle. Also, we've heard that Black Forest is a "must see". Is it doable in my route or is it out of way. If it is out of way but "must see", we don't mind shortening our Austria trip by a day.

I will really appreciate any advise.

Hey there,

I lived in Vienna and while you can do the main sights in a day (what you want to do is walk around the ring, as they call it, and into the centre, basically), I'd recommend staying a bit longer. I really enjoyed walking up through the vineyards to Kahlenberg (beware, it's a bit steep), because the view at the top is lovely and there are often sunloungers you can relax and recover in. Here's a picture of the night-time view:
I'd also recommend taking a look at the places mentioned on the website 'Spotted by Locals'. They can recommend you some amazing restaurants and little places that you'd never find otherwise, but can give you a real feel for the place.

Salzburg I'd say can be done in a day, as well as Linz and Innsbruck and I would assume Fussen too. They're all fairly small places. Munich is worth stopping in for a few day, Prague definitely too.

Hope this helps a bit!

Hello Asit 😊

I don't know much about scenic routes other than that you won't be travelling fast. If you take those all the time rather than the Autobahne, you'll have trouble keeping this rather ambitious schedule. Best to limit it to some driving in the Alps.

Unsure about The Black Forest. 'Must see' or not, it's near the French border, quite out of the way.

You could do a slightly scenic yet efficient route from Munich-Prague going through the Bohemian forest (šumava national park, on the czech-german border west of české budějovice), then up via klatovy and plzeň. The quickest route on the 'bahn is the same point of entrance to Prague but going through Regensburg instead. From Prague-Vienna you're pretty much stuck with the motorways through ČR, unless you want to go south and via Linz, which would be a double track and longer time.

If you really want to see the black forest, the best way to fit it in would probably be to shorten the Austria bit. I doubt you'd be able to fit it into that schedule unless you rushed through everywhere - you could try fitting it in between Innsbruck and Munich at the end if you reshuffle a bit.

@pilnikjezerobota - So if I had to map it on Google Maps, I should type "From Munich to Regensburg" (map 1) and "From Regensburg to Prague" (map 2)? If there is something I should type in, please tell me what to type and break it up by map 1, map 2, etc.

Also, from Prague to Vienna, is via Brno better or TELC? Reply to this

If you type in Munich to Prague on google maps it automatically gives you the route via Regensburg, as that's the quickest. If you want to take a different route you can drag the blue line somewhere else and it changes it for you.

For Prague-Vienna, I'd have said both routes probably take about the same amount of time, which is what google maps also thinks - the Brno/Bratislava route sticks to motorways so is quick and easy, but it's longer. Coming off the motorway at Jihlava is more direct, but on normal roads. For scenic value, Telč is a UNESCO site, so might make an interesting place to stop off in for half an hour on the way.
