My friend and I are traveling to Europe from 6/29 - 7/17 from San Francisco, going into Frankfurt and out of Amsterdam, any suggestions for how we can best utilize the time we have?

Hi everyone,

My friend and I have finally gotten a break and have purchased our flights to europe this summer.
We are flying into Frankfurt from San Francisco and back to San Francisco from Amsterdam. The dates are June 29 coming back July 17.
Any suggestions for which places we should visit? We are novices to europe so any information would be great. Just taking a stab, we were thinking intially of hitting amsterdam, luxemburg, brussel, amsterdam... too rushed? would it make sense to fit geneva in there somewhere? Or maybe try to go into France and then loop back to Amsterdam?
How practical would it be to try to go into Czech Republic and Vienna before swinging back north to Amsterdam?

any advice welcome!
thanks

Dear Chienli...

My nick is Inacho, I live in France but travel with some frequency around Europe... Here are some hints....

1. Brussels? No way it´s not a must
2. Amsterdam, if looking for mashrooms go ahead but do not lose your days with crapy tourists junk
3. Luxembourg? Are you planning some investments in Europe?
4. Prague? Do yourself a favour and give it a good three days
5. Austria? it´s a great city, kind of noble though society is coming old.

There are two possible trips Western or Eastern Europe. In this case, for eastern Europe I would recommend you

* Prague
* Budapest
* Vienna
* Munich
* Crakovia

Feed me back, just to check.

I agree about Brussels and Luxembourg, they're not very appealing places. But I must strongly disagree about Amsterdam and The Netherlands. To my opinion it's a pretty interesting country. I DO recommend you Amsterdam. There are a lot more to do and see than Red Light District and coffe shops -which, apart from the initial shock, are not interesting at all-. Amsterdam is one of the 5 or 6 unique cities in Europe and also its surroundings (Edam, Haarlem, Volendam, Marken, Delf and specially UTRECHT are worth a look). Look for information and read something about Polders, Rembrandt, the Concertgebow, Van Gogh,....

Some other suggestions: Munich -a nice surprise to me-, Slovenja -off the beaten track-, Switzerland- Konstanz Lake (you can have breakfast in Switzerland, lunch in Germany and dinner in Austria), Prague is really beautiful and very well preserved but people seemed a bit cold to me, on the other hand Budapest is not that beautiful although people is warmer (this is just a personal impression).

In Belgium, Brugge, Gent or Antwerpen are better destinations than Brussels. Reply to this

Thanks for the help and suggestions Gus and Inacho!
In my original travel plan, I was planning on going doing the following route
Frankfurt -> prague -> budapest -> vienna

However, because I ended up only able to get a ticket back out of Amsterdam, is it too much of a stretch to still try to do eastern europe? I also noticed that the normal eurail pass does not go to Czech or Hungry.. so if I go there, I understand it is a different fair. would it be worth it? as opposed to getting just a 15 day eurail pass for $500? Any transportation advice?

thanks!

Hey Charlie,

I don´t know whether I´m still in time to answer, but if so, hit me up at moonlightgirl80@aol.com

I´m a travel agent and know my way around all over Europe. From Germany, so I´ll recommend some places there too (no matter whether low budget or extraordinairy lodging- why not both?lol), but I also have some advice for you regarding how to get around cheaper and faster in Europe than by train. Due to my busy schedule, I cannot write everything down though, plus a lot of travellers on here don´t even reply to suggestions made. I´ll gladly help you out if help is still needed.

Greets from Germany
