I have booked a flight for september 1st to october 11th to frankfurt. I am wondering where I should go. I really want to see Hungary croatia Romania as well as Turkey Poland... basically I want to see as much as possible in the short time that i have there. I am scared though that my trip is going to end up being mostly sightseeing on a train, bus or plane because of all the place i want to see. Anyone know any good ideas on organizing an itinerary? Of the places you mentioned, I would only classify Romania as 'Eastern Europe'; from what I hear Bucharest is being redeveloped and becoming much more accessible and enjoyable. Poland and Hungary are former Eastern Bloc countries that now identify more with Central Europe, meaning they will be more 'tourist-friendly', while Croatia and Turkey, I expect, will feel more Mediterranean.

Other Eastern European cities you might enjoy are Kyiv and Lviv (Ukraine), Vilnius (Lithuania) and Minsk(Belarus). But if you're flying into Germany and worried about wasting time travelling between places - and want to see the best places east of Frankfurt, my advice would be to focus on Poland and Hungary.

Six weeks in eastern Europe:
I would definitely visit Budapest (Hungary), Vienna (Austria), Prag and Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic).
Poland, Romania and Turkey I did not enjoy so much. I would pick Istambul in Turkey, if I would go there the first time.
And I would travel by a river boat between Budapest and Vienna!

Kristen's itinerary depends on whether she wants to see the best European towns, or explore Eastern Europe: Vienna and Prague are in Central Europe; Istanbul is split between Southern Europe and Asia.

Go to Lviv, Ukraine for sure... amazing city, friendly people and CHEAP beer. I grew up there but now live in the USA. Last time I went there was 2008 and remembered how breathtaking architechture is and how much I missed it... It is one of those forgotten (or never known?) places but are very comparable to other popular European cities. I am sure you would enjoy your time there! 2-3 days is all you need. There is a direct flight from Munich, Prague and Warsaw. The airport is small but in the center of the city, only a short cab ride away from the main attractions. Reply to this

I second Lviv - definitely eastern Europe rather than central, a good atmosphere and great architecture.

A must see for Eastern Europe is Croatia and it's Adriatic coast with thousands of islands. On of the most popular destinations is Bol on island Brac. You can check more about it at bolcroatia.com. And while there, you can take trips to surrounding islands of Hvar, Mljet, Korcula and Vis, and the great sightseeg in the cities of Split, Trogir and Dubrovnik.
Been there and loved every minute 😉 Reply to this

So I have kind of made a tentative plan to head straight from frankfurt airport to berlin, because we arrive at 6am and I'd rather keep travelling then wait around to find lodging, from there I'm planning to head to warsaw, warsaw to krakow, krakow to l'viv and then to bratslavia, budapest, spend some time in romania (though I'm not quite sure what cities yet) down to sofia, one to belgrade over to croatia for maybe a week(I need some coastal time), up to
Ljubljana, then to munich and finally back to Frankfurt.

so I've got a few questions

a)Is this expecting too much?? I don't really know how long transport times are and don't want to spend my whole trip exploring trains, are there places on my list that I should cut??

b) should I get a global eurail pass or rely on buses and single pass train tickets?

c) what countries should i be expecting to spend the most money in?

thanks for all your help on this, you've already given me so much to think about
