Travelling around Italy on my own for a month!

Hi all,

I am currently in my second year in university so have decided to make the most of my summer and travel around Italy in July 2009.

I am going on my own (boyfriend might join me for a week in Rome) and wondered if anyone has stayed in hostels around Italy. As I am on my own I want to meet people over there to travel with or just enjoy that city with and wondered if I will meet many people.

I am also wondering how to find the best hostels to stay at which are reasonably priced and central. I am planning on going to Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Naples and want to go to somewhere with a nice beach to relax at the last part of my trip. Can anyone recommend a nice place to go that is close to Rome and Naples??

Can anyone also recommend any events or best places to go in the places I am visiting so I can make the most of my trip?

Thank you
Laura

Hello Laura 😊

If you are staying in hostel you are sure to meet lots of people. I have been to Italy a few times. I stayed in hostels and met lots of people in them. I also met people when I went out at night and when I was hanging around in cafes during the day.

It would be wise to prebook hostels since you will be in Italy in high tourist season. To find a hostel Google hostels and the city you want to find one in and a list will come up. You will be able to book them on their sites by paying a small deposit with your credit card.

Most hostels are central these days. Also, you can check their locations, amenities, prices, ratings etc on the internet. Also, you can post here on TravelBlog when you find a hostel that looks good, to ask if anyone here has stayed there etc.

Naples is a bit rough. So either be very careful with yourself and your belongings, and never walk around alone at night or else skip Naples. Appart from the safety issues, it is interesting to see a relatively untouristed Italian city. And it has local train connections to lots of really nice towns in the area.

Hi, if you will be in Rome in SUmmer there are plenty of events at night you will love it. you can check the events on the city's site (it is not updated yet) http://www.estateromana.comune.roma.it/

As of beaches, from Rome you can take a train to Sabaudia, it is really beautiful, one hour from Rome. Or you can go closer , to Ostia, only 30 minutes by subway.

Naples is really worth a visit. Just do not go around alone at night, don't go to areas where tehre are not many people, and do not wear jewelry... besides that... it is ok.

If you are planning to go to so many places, take a look at www.railpass.com, a rail pass may make you save on trasnportation costs and even in accomodation if you travel by night. Have fun! Reply to this

Thank you so much for your suggestions. Am a little worried bout going to Naples now because I have heard some stories from friends that have been there too so might skip that destination.

Thank you martybix, I am planning on buying a rail pass to travel around and thank you for suggesting the beach areas. Reply to this

Great decision Laura, the rail pass is definitely the best choice. I got mine on www.railpass.com.

Have fun, and do not skip Naples, it is really beautiful, trust me! You just have to have some common sense in avoiding exposure to "risky" areas at weird times! I have been there a number of times and never had a problem! feel free to ask for any information adn if you are planning to take some guided tours ore interesting experiences check this site out
Ciao!

Hello everyone, my name is Andrea and I suggest to visit : a project that concerns only the stay and accommodation in Italy (it's translated in english too).
You can find hundreds of lodgings of all types (camping to 5 *) all prices!
The site is very good and there is the possibility to contact the property directly without intermediaries!
Navigation and search are simplified by the maps that allow you to have a clear idea on the location selected, also are added every day events and special offers directly from owners of housing.

I have been to many beaches in Italy, but I agree with martybix about Sabaudia. Too bad you are not heading further south. Calabria and Puglia have some great beaches and they likely would not be as crowded. Reply to this
