Planning a trip to Europe, but not sure on where to go when!
18 years ago, March 31st 2006 No: 1 Msg: #4805
Hi, I'm planning (in the very begining stages!!!) a trip to Europe in a year and a half for about 9 months. We want to visit Britain (working in London), Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Greece.

We're arriving in London in January, then plan on heading to France for 2 weeks of snowboarding. From here we are trying to figure out the best route of travel. I was thinking of going back to London to work, then coming back to Europe to do the rest of the travelling (and re-visit France).

Could anyone suggest which of the mentioned places would be best during the months of May-September? Everyone says to avoid August, but thats going to be impossible!!

I know this is very general, but I'm in the inital stages of planning and need all the help and advice I can get!!! Thanks Reply to this

It's all good but special places in my heart are: Paris, Mt. St. Michel, Venice, Rothenberg, Germany and Brugge, Belgium. I have info about camping through Europe at my website, eurfirst.com, and some information about specific destinations. We are heading to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia this summer and will try to add info as we move from place to place. Best advice I can give you is to start by thinking about what you'd do on a vacation anywhere else? Museums? Nightlife? Hiking? Then incorporate that into your plans. August is busy but that also means lots of travelers to bounce off of, and lots of festivals. If you've got specific questions about specific places in western Europe, I'll pass on any advice I can.

If you want specific cities, you should look into Cinqueterra (Riomaggiore) and the Isle of Capri in Italy. I'd also check out Munich, Germany... it's supposed to be a really "young" city. On Monday nights, they have blade nights where thousands of people roller blade through the strees of Munich. You can also do Mike's Bike Tours there. Reply to this

Skate nights are really cool. They do this in many other cities around the world too...

Paris http://www.pari-roller.com/?lang=en

Berlin http://www.skate-night-berlin.com/index.shtml

Amsterdam http://www.fridaynightskate.com/mainf.asp?LangID=2

London http://www.londonskate.com/

To name but a few...

I've also been told that Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic is a town everyone should try to see. I read some good things about the hostels there, too, on www.hostelz.com Reply to this

How about camping in August? Mainland Europe or Britain. If you stay away from the big campsites (ie chains) and go for smaller ones, it should prove pretty inexpensive. Obviously the more facilities they have, the more expensive. Some suggestions are: Southern Germany/Bavaria - Munich and the Alps either June time or end of August, beginning of September.
Derbyshire, Lake District, Shropshire/Wales in the Summer.

Did you consider Malta as an option?

I suggest you visit www.bellamalta.com

Ah, the Czech Republic is Wonderful. If you just want to get ideas for places to go, I suggest exploring around in Europe with Google Earth. It is the most awesome 3D global map ever. You can download placemarkers for it from tons of places. exploreglobe.net has sets of placemarkers for google earth that link to photos, info, etc. and show the locations of castles, monuments, natural features, towns, cities, transportation hubs, etc. It's like exploring Europe before you go and with no limitations. It is kind of like the poor mans vacation or the ultimate trip planner. Reply to this

Hi teebar,

I live in the UK (just south of London) and have travelled a fair bit elsewhere in Europe. I guess I'll echo some of the previous poster's comments, but here are a few of my thoughts:

- Paris and Prague are both beautiful cities...you'll find that you need a larger budget to get by in Paris.

- If you want somewhere a bit off the beaten track then Krakow (Cracow) in Poland is wonderful and less crowded with other tourists than the cities alrady mentioned.

- Barcelona has a great nightlife, impressive architecture and some nice beaches. You can get cheap flights there from the UK.

- London itself is great of course! (but I guess you already know that and it was predictable that I'd think so anyway!)

Enjoy your trip!

Definitely hit up Amsterdam, it's a really fun city to go to. Lots of fun stuff to do. You sound like a pretty active traveler, you might want to check out RealAdventures. Here, you can plan your vacation, find places to stay and things to do when you're there. I know I like to have a lot of options on one site, and that's why I like realadventures.com.

If you're afraid of crowding, why not do some countryside locations? You could go out in the hills of Umbria or Emilia Romagna in Italy (both of them border and are similar to Tuscany, but not as "advertised") and spend some time exploring the local culture, hanging out in villages and medieval hilltop towns... eating authentic food... If you want like an island place, the remoter areas of Crete are also an excellent way to avoid crowds. Maybe you're looking for more excitement than that, but I've found that doing this sort of thing for a week or two can be really relaxing, and sometimes the most "authentic" experience you can get these days. What do I recommend? Why, my own website! ;-) www.rentvillas.com - you can browse locations by clicking on a map and get information about each (what to do there, etc.), so it's a good way to start planning. Also, basically what we do is rent villas and apartments... I don't know whether you're on a budget or not, but renting and cooking for yourself is a great moneysaver (we also have some really luxurious places, too!)

Hey,

I really liked Bratislava when I went there. Friendly people, cheap food and drinks. The only thing is it might be best to sort out accommodation before you go; the accommodation available on arrival can be a little variable in quality... old Soviet university dorms and the like.

Hey,
Sounds like your in for an amazing 9 months. You have definately chosen some great places to visit. If you like to party then the greek islands are absolutely amazing & crazy! We made it too Ios and Santorini and had a blast.
Also if you can make it too any of the festivals then they are always a great experience. Like oktoberfest in Munich, La Tomitina near Valencia and the running of the bulls in Pampola.

Btw I would recommend the greek islands at any time during the summer months. Also we went through www.hostelsclub.com which actually offer free nights in Venice (you can check out the offer on our website).

Enjoy your trip! Reply to this

Hi! Yep, Bratislava is great! Loved it also! Wonderful Stare Misto (Old City in Bratislava) with a lot of cafes. But definitely would be better to visit it in summer, when there are a lot of outdoor places to drink beer 😊 Reply to this
