We plan to travel through Europe with our black labrador Jessie. Which countries are dog friendly, and which are not? Have you ever travelled with a dog in Europe? If so, please post your experiences both good and bad here? Any other advice about travelling Europe with a dog welcome.
Hi all!
We live in Holland at the moment but before we'll move back to Australia we'd love to see more of Europe. As we are at the start of making our plans we are still very flexible BUT we're not going to any other country without the dog!
We are wondering if any of you travelled with a dog before. Main questions at this point are:
- We'd love to go to big cities as Paris and Rome, good idea or should we forget about it?
- Is it allowed to walk with your dog through big cities or is it better to stick to the countryside or smaller towns?
- Its probably easiest to stay at caravan parks but are there any other options staying overnight?
- If you travel for about 3 months how much would you need to save up? (we know its a tough question cause it depends on what you like doing but a general idea of the $$ spent would be appriciated!)
- We'd love to travel and then work somewhere before travelling on. Anyone any ideas on were to get a temporary job?
- Does wooffing exist in Europe? Anyone that has done this before?
- We're looking for at least one great spot to go and surf, any tips on where to go?
- Would love to play a nice game of golf. Where to go?
- Any good health retreats were you can have a nice workout too? Maybe natural springs/mud baths/ ... ?
Thanks in advance!!!
Kind Regards,
Garth & Saskia
Reply to this Hello Garth and Saskia 😊
I dont know about all parts of Europe, but avoid Ireland with a dog. They will not be allowed in anywhere and they would be put in quarantine for a while also, before they are allowed to enter the country.
I dont have a dog, but here in Germany where I live they seem to be allowed everywhere. I see people walking them in city streets and they are also in cafes and bars.

Reply to this Regarding going to big cities, have you thought about finding boarding kennels for you dog for a few days here and there along the way? That way you could still take him with you, but if you plan to go anywhere thats not appropriate for a dog, or you want to stay somewhere that will not accomodate animals for a night or two you could drop him off for a couple of days. Sorry for suggesting if kennels are not you thing!
Have no idea about the standard of boarding kennel facilities in Europe, but here in the UK I have used some fantastic places for my two dogs.
Have you got advice on vaccinations your dog will need? I have looked into taking my dog to Europe from the UK and there are vaccinations and blood tests they need, am not sure of the regulations if you are travelling within the continant.
Reply to this I went to Italy with my shih-tzu 2 years ago, had papers in English and Italian and at the airport no body even checked them. All the hotels I stayed in allowed dogs, both France and Italy have hotels that are dog friendly, and even some shops and restaurants allow dogs inside. I had absolutely no problems with him on buses, trains - now granted he is only 5kilos and was in a rolling case, and I found it easy to travel with him. Europe is certainly more dog friendly than the States.
Reply to this Hey guys,
Thanks so much for the respond so far! The idea about boarding kennels is pretty good, we would not want Jessie to be away from us too much but for a night or two is deffinatly possible. Our dog is a bit bigger then the 5 kilo shih-tzu so i guess taking her everywhere is quite difficult even though busses and trains wont be a problem.
We don't plan to go to the UK because of the quarantine and stuff, but through the rest of Europe should be pretty fine we though as she does have her passport and microchip and vaccinations.
Anyone that travelled Europe before in about 2 months and has a nice itenerary we'd love to hear!!
Ciao!
