I would beware of buying boat and bus tickets from agents on the Khao San Road. They are famous for their scams. Also, it is better to take a bus by the national bus company from the bus station, if you are travelling at night. Robberies on private busses are more frequent than on the national busses.

Emma: Depending on your nationality, at Thai immigration you will get a 30 day entry if you arrive without a visa. You can then travel to a border point (e.g. Mae Sai on the Burmese border) leave the country for as little as 5 minutes (!) and get another 30 days.

Forgot to say that you can only renew the 30 day entry one time only - giving you a total of 60 days - which should be enough if you are coming for a maximum 8 weeks. Reply to this

An option to consider is staying in Phukett town. It is easy to take busses from the day market to the various beaches for around 50 bahts.

In the town there is a backpackers hostel. I dont know what the prices are like but if it calls itself a backpackers hostel then hopefully the prices reflect this. Here is their web link. Backpackers hostel in Phukett town It is located conveniently beside the day market.

When I was in Phukett I stayed in a hotel for just 120 Bahts for a room. It was about half way between the bus station and the day market so also conveniently located. It had however windowless rooms and the squat toilets are off putting for many. If you are interested in staying at this place I will post the name and address of it here. It is very clean which is another selling point for it. Reply to this
