I'm going to be spending Christmas and New Years visiting my cousin who is stationed at Spangdahlem Air Base. Any tips on fun things to do in and around the area? Also, I've always wanted to visit Berlin. Is this possible from Spangdahlem? Are there trains from the area to Berlin? Any tips would be much appreciated.

Spangdahlem is - no real surprise for an air base - pretty remotely located.
Trier, the oldest city of Germany, is the next bigger city.

You could also fly from Hahn (HHN) or Cologne/Bonn (CGN) to Berlin.
There are shuttle buses from Trier to Hahn (which are not displayed by the DB timetable)
