Travel problems in Würzburg throughout Europe

I am currently staying in Würzburg, Germany. Studying at a local university. I am currently trying to figure out what is the best way to travel and have stumbled on a few problems. One of my main problems is transportation.

Hello Michael 😊

Night trains can be a very cheap way to travel around Germany and Europe. You can book the trains on Deutsche Bahn . The cheapest night trains to any part of Germany are 29 Euros and to any part of Europe are 39 Euros. Book a few months in advance to try to score these deals.

I dont think flying is such a great option for you if there is no airport nearby.

You could also try mitfahrzentrale It is a company which finds paying passangers for those wanting to make a car journey.

At least Würzburg is well connected by trains.

Deals always available from Würzburg:
VRN area, e.g. places like Heidelberg or Speyer

http://www.vrn.de/imperia/md/content/service/informationsbroschueren/visitors-international_01-2008_low.pdf
VRN has 24 hours tickets. If bought on Saturday they are valid till 3am of the next weekday.
Trains to/from Würzburg are covered by VRN tickets. Trams and buses in Würzburg not.

Bavaria Ticket
A day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria. Plus nearly all other local public transport (e.g. trams and buses in Würzburg). Or in Nuremberg the U-Bahn to the airport.
covered railroads/stations map

Validity:
Mo-Fr from 9am till 3am next day
Sa,Su from midnight till 3 am next day
Bavaria Ticket Single (1 person) EUR 18,00
Bavaria Ticket (2-5 persons) EUR 27,00

Baden-Württemberg Ticket
Similar to the Bavaria Ticket but no for Baden-Württemberg. Würzburg is however also covered (but only the trains to/from Würzburg. Not the trams and buses there).

You could use this ticket to travel to Stuttgart Airport.

Advantage is that these tickets are always available. While cheap specials for far distance trains and flights tend to sell out fast. Esp. for weekend trips.
And it would be stupid to miss the highlights of these areas.

other airports you may consider:
Nuremberg Airport (NUE)
Stuttgart Airport (STR)
Hahn Airprot (HHN)
shuttle bus from Würzburg to Hahn

Also something to consider:
BahnCard 50 for students (EUR 110,00 gives 50% discount on normal train fare for 1 year). Esp. useful if you like to use the fast trains towards Frankfurt and Munich.

how do you exactly order the bavaria ticket. I was trying to find the checkout page but couldnt ever get to it. I get the part where it asks you it says your station and where your going and showing your departure stuff. then if I do not have any option to add which one I want. At the top right I see Change, New Query, Return Journey. If I click return journey it just goes back to like where I can fill in the info and doesn't save my previous outward destination.. You go to a ticket machine and buy a Bavaria Ticket (Bayern Ticket). From/to is of no interest as long both places are inside the area covered by the Bavaria Ticket (and Bavaria is nearly twice as big as Switzerland).
Buying in advance makes no sense as this ticket is always available but comes with no change, no refund.

You can also go to a counter, but there it will cost EUR 2,00 more. Reply to this

ok. sorry the wording on the site from Bahn.de is wierd. hard to understand when they translate it. If I get one tomorrow(friday) and take a train at 9:30am to Nurnberg. And then leave at 10pm. This would cover it going to nurnberg and back anytime from 9am(friday morning) to 3am (Saturday morning)?

In principle: yes
But you cannot take the ICE at 09:31 from Würzburg. Bavaria Ticket does not cover far distance trains like ICE or IC/EC. But you can take the RE at 09:40.

and select as means of transport "only local transport" if you plan to use the Bavaria Ticket (or Baden-Württemberg Ticket or VRN tickets). Reply to this
