Train Travel

We would like to take a train from Munich hbf to Amsterdam...the only train I'm finding is approx 263usd for one way.

When we took the train last year from Munich to Fussen...it was around 23euro. What am I doing wrong? Wrong trains?

If someone could give me advice on where to look, I would truly appreciate that! Reply to this

Hello Brad 😊

My boyfriend is actually going exactly that route in September. His train tickets are 50 Euros each way. That is on the night train.

Here is the link where he found tickets for that price.

I also buy special offer tickets on the night trains from Munich to Hamburg, Berlin....... for 39 Euros.

Buy on the internet with your credit card. It costs less than buying the tickets at the train stations. Make sure you have id and your credit card with you when you get on the train. The conductor sometimes asks to see these.

From: Munich
To: Amsterdam

Normal tickets for day time trains are between EUR 127,00 and EUR 147,40.
Specials start from EUR 39,00. These tend to sell out fast however. You can book them at earliest 89 days before traveling.

Munich - Füssen is 131 km by rail.
Munich - Amsterdam is 902 km by rail. Reply to this

To answer your question about the different fees: no, you did nothing wrong.
There are special offers that are valid only within the respective German state. That would have applied to your trip from Munich to Füssen. (Plus of course the distance Munich-Amsterdam is a good deal longer than Munich-Füssen and therefore much more expensive)
Long distance connections are very expensive, I'm afraid. You can get a discount if you book in advance but in that case you'd be obliged to take the very train you booked. If the train is delayed and you miss the connection and have to take the next train, your ticket won't be valid in that one so that might end up with an even higher fee!
The $ 263 connection you found is presumably the cheapest one.

Have you already had a look into the flights? I just looked up the connections for late October and the cheapest offer I found was approx. the same as the train ticket (but you'd arrive much faster and more comfortable).
If you book several weeks in advance, the prices are far lower: you can get a flight for $ 170 in early December (at the current exchange rate). If there is a delay and/or you miss a connection, the flight company is to give you some of your money back (the exact amount depends on the duration of the delay).

Personally, I prefer flying over the train. German trains are incredibly filthy, badly maintained, notoriousely late and the fees are outrageous.
