I have 4 days at the beginning of July to spend in the Campania area. I thought it might be a cool idea to base myself on the island of Ischia for this period and take day trips to Vesuvius, Naples, Amalfi, and Pompeii.
Does this make sense or will it be too inconvenient/expensive to make these day trips from Ischia?
I was also considering basing myself in Sorrento (too touristy?) or Naples (too dodgy?).
Any suggestions?

Last time I was in that area I stayed in a town on the train line between Naples and Pompeii. Now I cant remember the name of the town. It was a good place to stay because it was in a good location for the train, not at all touristy and fairly safe. It was a pretty little place but a bit run down. I actually thought the hostel I was staying in was in Naples but it turned out that is was in this little town and I had to take a train from Naples to get to it.
I would stay in any town that you can get to by train from Naples with reasonabley priced accomodation. You could also stay in Naples but be very vigilent. Dont let people on the street distract you and keep your valuables well out of site. Also, I would avoid taking taxis.
