BEIJING -- With unrest in Tibet casting a shadow over the Summer Olympics, Chinese officials will hold an emergency meeting today with the Dalai Lama's negotiators, the office of the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said Friday.
: :
: :
Tibet advocates hailed the planned meeting as a sign that the Chinese were bowing to international pressure. World leaders, including President Bush and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, have called on China to negotiate with the Dalai Lama, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Many have made a dialogue with the exiled Tibetan a precondition for attending the Aug. 8 opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing.....

China confirms Dalai Lama envoy meeting

It was the highest level meeting since dialogue resumed in 2002 and the second closed-door meeting the rioting in March.

The unrest heaped international pressure on China to deal with the Nobel laureate, who fled into exile in India in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule.

Huang, 45, is among dozens of Chinese writers and lawyers who have been convicted, detained, placed under house arrest, tailed or otherwise harassed as part of China's broad crackdown on dissent in the run-up to the Olympic Games in Beijing next month. At least 44 writers are in Chinese prisons in violation of their rights to free expression, more than at the beginning of the year, according to a report released Tuesday by the PEN American Center, an advocacy group.

Activist groups pushing for a boycott have found themselves relatively isolated, and most recognized from the outset that a stay-away from the Games was unlikely.

On July 22, two bombs exploded on two buses and resulted in 3 people dead and 14 people injured in Kunming. The reason of the explosion is still under research but many people believed that the terrorists did it. Although it happened in Kunming, the explosion has drawn Beijing Olympic Commity's attention. Right now, various kinds of counter-terrorism actions are prepared to insure a secure Olympic.
Security has been tightened in subway lines, railway stations, airports, etc. Beijing Capital International Airport is to implement special security checks so as to safeguard air transport safety for the upcoming Olympic Games.

from July 20, special security equipment has been installed at the entrances of all three terminal buildings in the airport. All passengers, visitors, and airport employees will have to go through security checks when entering the airport. Anyone found in possession of banned items will be severely punished.

You can go to echinacities.com for the detailed information.

BEIJING - Just over a week before the Beijing Olympics, a militant Islamic group's claims of responsibility for bombings in China have fueled unease about security.

Travel in Xinjiang is safe now as anytime. Organised tours and visits are well looked after and all the people I met are friendly to foreigners like almost every where else in China. However - I have just abandoned my travel in Xingjiang and would advise against going there - outside of a travel group - because of the restrictions on which hotel you can stay at and places that you cannot visit. Better to go almost anywhere else in China where the fantastic experience is not soured by these things. The situation is not due to Chinese crackdown on political issues (according to local taxi driver) but due to recent clashes between the some of the 23 minority ethnic groups. Reply to this

Apparently because of the heavy security in Beijing the political unrest is more likely to break out in other parts of China instead.

... so much security focused on Beijing, areas far from game venues make tempting targets that could also diminish China's Olympic moment.

In an audacious and deadly attack just days ahead of the Beijing Olympics, two men from a mainly Muslim ethnic group rammed a truck and hurled explosives at jogging policemen in China's restive far west Monday, killing 16.

The government has designated zones for protest in parks around the city, but human rights campaigners warn that Chinese citizens will be deterred from taking part by the fear of reprisals and several groups have already been denied permits.

fretur,

In response to your question, I think it should be more or less safe to visit China during the Olympics. However, some media outlets have issued travel advisories for those planning to go to Beijing.

It might be a good idea to avoid the capital, simply because of all the crowds.
